Gave my drafts to a Lansing forum member. Here's currently building a pair of 18" Waldorf.

Support the scoop technology, larger mouth plays louder!

I can't wait to take measurements. I expect the same kick as a JBL 4530, a much lesser dip at 120Hz as well as more bass from 30-80Hz than even JBL's 4520 because of the much larger rear chamber and larger mouth at almost 75% bigger (41" x 38" versus 33" x 27" = 1558sq.inch versus 891sq.inch)
Sure it will be big. ;-) |

'cos of bigger chamber, you had to put more energy into drivers, to get decent compression at the horn thorat.

That's an old draft. The latest version has a very smooth bend. Also, the newer version has an hyperbolic progression, while the one shown on top is exponentiel.

Some progress. The scoop portion will be laminated in place with the proper shape.

whoever's building these is going to be grinning like a ... for the foreseeable. got a driver out of the half decware versions i built so will take some photo's tomorrow of as much of the internals as you can see, this version definitely has more care taken on the corner reflectors/general expansion.
looks to be about half the chamber volume on these which would make sense with them being used as a kick bin above the berthas i suppose.

There's a lost volume under the rear chamber, even in the original Waldorf. It is sealed and not used. And it has been built yet. But I suggested my friend to make removable separators just to test the difference between a regular and an extended rear chamber. BTW Even with the regular (smaller) rear chamber, volume is perhaps three times as what it is for a JBL 4520
The lower scoop is built using four members with the proper exit shape, on which kerfed plywood will be glued and nailed. Exemple of what kerfing can produce in term of shaping... Edited by Lee In Montreal - 29 February 2012 at 5:55pm |
