They have a anchor point just below the socket, so the cable will run along the anchor .....be it chain or wire bond. But will give it a thoughtTongue thanks. These are now going to be Active anyway.

Like this....was about 2 years ago. An Iron Maiden sound engineer was here on holiday and heard this, he couldn't complement me enough (let the jokes flow)

i was under the impression that circular bins were the best shape, just that they were hard to make.

in terms of the acoustics of each individual cabinet (or each individual section within Mykeys 4 speaker one) then yeah, circular ones have a lot of advantages with no internal parallel walls etc. But the problem we initially spoke about comes because of the way the cabs will play together.

because he has four speaker sections in a row within this cab, essentially he's making almost a small line array, and there are very specific rules that need to be followed because of the way the sound from each speaker within the cab is going to interact with the others below and above. One of the main rules is that the physical spacing for each driver (centre to centre) should be less than half of the highest wavelength it'll be playing, to stop comb filtering (cancellations).

For low and mid frequencies this isn't too much of a problem because the spacing of the drivers is close together compared to the wavelength of those frequencies. But for upper mid and high frequencies, as the wavelength gets progressively smaller and smaller the spacing of each driver is going to get into similar distances to, and then become bigger than, it and problems will start to occur.

Line array companies spend significant time and money developing fancy wave guides and horn profiles that (attempt to) fix this and change the HF output from a single point to a complete line all the way down the cabinet so that they remove the idea of spaces between each one, its one of the main problems when designing an LA box.

but because Mykey has used coaxial drivers, he has his HF section at the centre of each one and cant (or at least its much harder! Smile ) to do this and so he'll have four individual HF sections with space between them and so will have comb filtering.

However he does claim to have at least minimised this using custom horns, and he knows his stuff so I don't doubt there will be something clever happening and it would be nice to get some more details if he is able to share without revealing too many secrets.....(hint hint!! Tongue)

It is also worth bearing in mind that comb-filtering in the vertical plane is not so easily noticed as the horizontal plane. Very rarely do we listen to a PA whilst bobbing up and down.

The differences which would mainly be at upper HF would probably not be noticed by anyone who was not specifically listening for them, although no doubt easily measurable.

That said I personally would not equip all of my balls with a comp, probably just every other one, but this as Kevin has stated does not take into account what Mykey has done with the wave-guides.

Kevin, dont forget that this is point source array. Not Line array. If Mykey use horns with15-20 degree vertical dispersion then it will all be just as it should be.
Very good job there Mykey. Now paint it yellow and put some antennas on the top one. It will be the cutest box assembly ever :-).
