Hello.
Just finished a lovely project. I've been running duel concentric (co-ax) tops for the past year or two, and very nice too, but... top end wasn't really cutting it in really big venues, so I converted my tops back to 2 x 10" + a horn, which left me with 6 very nice duel conc drivers. ideal solution? bi-amped bass- midtop monitors. This was the plan: and here's the real thing, CNC cut out & assembled by SOS in North Devon: Add a bit of paint: and some carpet, made from 100% recycled plastic bottles, and some superb grills from Mark the grill man: Add some phat electronics & some chunky choons: So, it's a bi-amped speaker, with a passive network between the mid & tweeter. Cones, bass is the Ciare SW12.00 which is good down past 40Hz, peaking at 50/60Hz. active crossover at 150Hz at the moment. 10" PHL midrange - a custom one. similar to the 3860, but modified to be co-ax Opus passive crossver, about 3KHz top end, a 1.4" 18sound compression driver. It weighs a tonne, but it's more of a studio monitor than a PA speaker, although its just as happy doing low mid & mid-top with some bass bins, as part of a small PA. it'll be getting it's first rinse out with 2 x double 15's in Gloucester this weekend coming, then off to the studio, bi-amped again. Nice looking build and a really useful cab, Love those SW12 driver's (apart form the weight) and surprised more people don't use them.

yup, they do weigh a ton.
the PHL mid is ferrite, the 18sound 1.4 is pretty bulky & the passive network is pretty substantial too. luckily they're just for studio use, not for rentals. I wouldn't like to put them on a stand! |

Excellent. Jody bought one over to measure up for the grills so I can attest to the build quality. Nice to see the finished job.

Why's that? back to front? actually, there's a cut-out handle at the base of the rear panel, and the combination of the top & rear handles is a really comfy 1 person lift. That's why it's that way around. Edited by opus jody - 16 September 2012 at 2:11pm |

aah gotcha.
possibly, yes. Carpet limits the options somewhat though. curvy cutouts are a pain to carpet, & there's not much room behind for an internal box, because of the ferrite mid. That said, it was pure habit that made me put one there. |

That new carpet really looks great Jody!! An i just love the fact that it was once old drinks bottles!
Cant wait to hear them bud. Tony- Regarding the flip handle. At first i tried to pursuade Jody to go for something a bit more curvy as i have the same displike of their apearance. But when we looked at it there really wasn't enough room to put any kind of handle that would enter the mid chamber as the chassis and motor system is well substantial on the PHL to say the least!! Jody really wanted to keep the dimensions down and as Jody said the use of that placement and the one at the rear does work for moving the box around quite efficiently. |
