i have a jhs digitech delay and have used a boss digital delay...

from my opinion, they both are good sounding but the jhs has the edge over the boss because when you echo it ect it sounds clearer and crisper and you can do a lot more on a jhs delay than a boss...
respect

I had a JHS Digitec Delay in the 80's after upgrading from a Frontline Delay/Sampler unit. The JHS was a nice unit but it was a bit too noisy for me. It is a very hands on unit which was good for me as I liked to play about with delays and get it sing with my pre amp. As I grew up it started to become a bit too limited for me so I flogged it or gave it away - I cant remember which. Also try and look for a Roland SDE2000 or the Korg equivalent (DD2000?) which are better quality than the JHS if this is the type of sound and features you are after. Vestax also done a half descent one. I've got a Boss Delay/Sampler pedal in its original box but haven't used it as yet.

Don't get fooled by the hype. You need to ask yourself what do I actually want to do with a delay and can I find a modern unit that will get the results that I'm looking for. In fact you should ask these questions when you consider buying any piece of equipment. Don't get caught up with you mus have dis n dat if you want to be called a 'Roots n Culture' sound - IMHO of counrse......

Hope the above helps

Blessed

+1 on this bit of advice. It's spot-on. Design and affordability of digital delays was rapidly changing in the mid '80s. These days you can get a box that would have been untouchable. The later Digitech delays were really interesting units because they were much lower noise but still low bit depth and sample rates so in my opinion have a low fi, but just about acceptable sound. To my ears this generation of delays is THE sound of the time.

Given today's choices I would go for a multi tap delay from TC.

Heres a clip of Jah Shaka at the Rocket. He uses a JHS unit in the clip using the delay for vocal fx.
Alot of old effects units are sought after, the HH tape echo and Roland space echo being good examples. There were alot of crud and cheap effects over the years by many manufacturers but there were also a few gems.
LET THE BASS ROLL LIKE THUNDER
