Hey up, I have a guy asking me for a price on birch plywood so he can ship a few sheets to Jamaica...is he for real? Is it not possible to get it there? Wouldn't it be easier to import it from the US? Or is this something that happens quite regularly?

USA imports it, unfortunately, there is no natural source as far as I am aware, but shipping from the States has got to be the answer. that's if it's a genuine enquiry.

Surely there's such a thing as a wood yard in Jamaica? I just can't believe it's really worth shipping less than a container load, and then why would they want to buy it wholesale in the UK when they could go straight to the manufacturer for it...clarts....

I once cut the internals of some hogs and sent them to Jamaica thinking I could get the rest of the material there, I went to a woodyard with a sample of 18mm birch, the guy I spoke to said he has never before seen anything like the sample, so I have started to make my speakers and ship them there. It is really expensive but it's my really expensive hobby Big smile.

Lev, di termites dem bad, haffi keep an eye on the cabs. LOL

AFAIA shipping into Jamaica isn't extortionate as they have a lot of back-haul space on exports, but most building material are not home content and cost a lot...

Could you not pre-cut the sheets and say it is furniture?  Bookshelves, table, etc.

Guess you could, but you'd still be charged for the cost of the plywood. It would depend on if you have the time to make them up yourself or find someone decent who can. I use to ship pre-cut wood but would spend my time putting cabs together, boring.
