If anyone else is experiencing this, really slow response to commands etc, freezing up....its caused by the svchost running at 100% CPU,(or 50% on a dual-core) slowing everything up....to cure it,you need to install the latest update files from microsoft,but......however,trying to open windows update page just freezes it solid again, after about 6 attempts, and by switching the update time a few times,it will finally connect, and after downloading and installing about 15 update files, problem is cured.
I have done it on 4 different machines yesterday,so if anyone else has the problem, that's what to do. http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us |

hit windows+r, type msconfig and hit enter, then disable everything in your startup, see if that helps (you'll need to reboot to see if it worked)

If the pc is old and just used for internet browsing and some office work, install Linux as it uses much less recources. That might help speed things up a bit.
Any of the bigger distros like Ubuntu etc. should be user friendly and easy to use. |

Just had to remove AVG (2014 Free) - started causing major problems on my XP-driven system after the latest Microsoft security update on Tuesday. Initially thought I might have a Rootkit infection - but several scans (using various antivirus software) AVG (AVGWDSVC.EXE) started eating into my CPU utilisation, I started having BSODs and eventually had to reboot in safe mode and fully remove AVG to solve the problem. I use BT Cloud for safe offsite storage and can't get this to work locally so may need to contact BT but I still suspect the MS update caused the problem. I will keep you informed of any further info I recieve.

...yes moved off AVG 2yrs ago. use to be good now its just bloated to buggery. dont use zonealarm any more either... it distroys your CPU in double quick time.
have a look at comodo internet security suite. its free and works.
