Ok, so I'm looking for a new laptop for my laser work and probably to replace my desktop (which will be repurposed as a dedicated server/transcoder for my home media I expect)

However, when i look for 17" laptops, I get a lot of what seem to be marketed as 'gaming' laptops around £1k and then a few 'workstation' units at quite a bit more ££, but I'm not sure where the extra ££ is going TBH, certainly the workstations often seem to come with a lower grade GFX (nVidia 840 instead of 850/860 on the gamers)

So, my query is, should a decent gaming laptop (i7) make a good workstation and general use PC too? Backlit keyboards and all the useful 'gig tools' seem to be prevalent too.
I quite fancy having a go at the new Elite game too when it hits general release, so a gamer will be no bad thing.

Obviously the downside is they all seem to come in 'bling' cases these days, but I'm sure I can find a nice toned down one that doesn't look like its going to transform into a robot and walk off...

They do all seem to come with SSD's and loads of RAM which is a bonus.

I'd probably just go for a Lenovo Y series but they don't do a 17" and the W series are a LOT more.

MSI and gigabyte seem to be very competitive and I've heard good things about the MSI build quality (their MOBO's were very good when they first appeared on the market I recall)

Keep up, been on limited beta for a few weeks now and public beta from tomorrow

Lots of youtube vids to marvel over - same old game brought up to date

Elite: Dangerous

The scale is just unbelieveable. there's a vid that really demonstrates the size of the galaxy. Apparently, once the programmed limits are reached, it auto generates as people discover it

Are there better machines out there?
BTW Dell was manufacturing them since the start as OEM.

Thats an interesting link, thanks.
The Y series LEnovo actually gets a decent rating, I might be steered back that way, especially after reading about how un-portable the 17" units can be.

Blimey, just completely by accident bought a Y510p Lenovo!
And i was only browsing ebay, and I got sucked into clicking the Buy It Now button.... (you know how it happens.... )

To be fair, its not that much of an impulse buy - I'd been looking at them for about a year, and for an i7 with 1TB HDD with 8GB SSD, dual (SLI) 750M gfx cards, backlit keyboard, etc, etc I was prepared to spend ~£900 for one, but I just got a Lenovo refurbed one for just over £700. A lot of laptop for the money I think.

Downside is, its got Win8 :(
Easily fixed though
