Hi all,

My old HK Actor rig is becoming untidy, been used for nearly 10 yrs on a mobile disco and it's starting to show a lot of wear and not sound as great as when it was new. Basically I see it as time to send it the way of Old Yeller, and replace it. Ideally I'd've replaced it with another Actor but they don't make them no more, and second hand ones are always shagged to death! The Actor DX also doesn't appeal to me, not heard good things.

I've had a look at the Linear 5 Rock Pack system as a replacement. 4 subs and 2 tops, same as the Actor as I like the form factor. The subs are 2x10", 2 subs are powered and 2 are passive that link to the powered subs to form full stacks. Tops are 12" + 1". Class D amps in all, a 350w + 650w bi-amp in the tops, and a 1200w in the active subs.

All fairly generic stuff in the world of active systems, what's everyone's opinion on them? I'll be using them for the disco, for a lot of high end weddings and corporate events etc so they definately need to look the part, which. I think they do. Most of all though, what's the opinions on the sound of them for this type of usage?

I've heard them being used on a disco previously, and I thought they sounded great but the bass sounded a bit muddy. Soon realised that the system was stacked on a 3ft high stage with the subs on their sides and the tops plonked on top, so I put the slightly confused bass sound down to the fact that they couldn't couple with the ground so well. Otherwise I thought it sounded great. But I wanted to ask around here in case anyone had used them more extensively than I had, and could talk about real world usage with them and their capabilities.

It's a £4000 system so I wanna get the know how from some of the guys on here before I slap the cash on the counter. I don't have any retailers local that I can demo otherwise I would.

Thanks guys, comment below!

My only experience of them was not good. http://forum.speakerplans.com/hk-elements_topic86348_post875480.html?KW=#875480 but I suspect this was down to set up/ operator rather than the system its self.

When live bands were playing the low end was distinctly lacking but as in your experience the subs were well above ground level.

As I said in that post, the sound quality was good when playing recorded stuff so I would think with a good engineer they would be ok for recorded music in small to med venues.

Sack it off and get a Yamaha DSR system.

Hi Jordan,

Thanks a lot for the reply. Your post led for interesting reading, thanks for sharing that with me.

Looks like you had a right arsehole to deal with, it does sound like that was due to the operator but like I said I'm looking for all experiences with this system, good or bad. I will back up the fact that the Elements though aren't up to much, I've got 2 tops and a sub in my front room for a small home cinema, films etc and it's great in there but I'd never ever use it live etc definately not up to this.

I'm an amateur semi pro live sound engineer by trade so I'm confident I'll be able to get it running great on a disco. I say semi pro, because let's face it the last thing this site needs is yet another hyped up "pro engineer". I'm not the best but I'm confident enough in my knowledge and what I do. But yeah thanks again for your input goes much appreciated!

Toasty ghost, thanks for the input but I'm really not big on the Yamahas, had to run through them a lot at my local residency and no matter how I set the system up its mediocre at best. Looking specifically into this system. Cheers anyway though!

Agreed, at least with the tops its great kit, especially when you consider that its active and you're also paying for the amp.  Subs are a little lacking when you try and use them 1:1, but same with most systems two subs to a top is usually about right anyway.

Edit:  haha sorry you replied while I was typing. Not used them for playback much, but for live music in pub sized venues, with a decent sub, they were great.

Having said what I have, I would definately recomend hearing some before buying. I would hate to think that you will spend £4K based on my assumption that they will do what you want them to do!

Hi,

I have already heard them, and liked them a lot. I've also heard the bigger system with 15" tops and dual 12" subs, and preferred it. However due to its size it would be impractical to me. I've got a retailer who can order it in for me and I try before I buy but nowhere to demo as such.

I heard them and they are impressive for the size!
However for me the low end din't go low enough (which i was expecting from 10") and I missed overall spl on the whole system.
The guy who owned the system said 3 subs per side would be better balanced and I agree.
But I listen to Tech-house/techno so thats different than the events you are talking about.

My guess is that it would be perfect for you, compact and nice looking.

Grts

Hi Fazer cheers for the input. I'll also update this thread!

I have bought this system and am very pleased! Definately worth the money in my eyes and also got a bit of a deal. Four subs all active, two active tops, all covers, casters on the backs of the subs and Van Damme cabling all for £3.5k - which I'm overjoyed with.

It has had more than enough low end for my needs, the only complaint I have is there's a fair bit of rear spill from the bass cabs. But I don't mind that, just not sure why. Still lots out the front. Extremely wide coverage and very efficient!

Full 5 year HK warranty, but after this period I will definately consider putting all B&C drivers in the cabs as although it's a very nice system, I'm not sure of the lifespan of the Sica drivers fitted in them, designed specifically for HK mind.

Lots of guts, tops can be a bit overpowering at times but I just roll them off a bit. So far I've used it for a large conference room gig to about 750 21-30 yr olds and it coped absolutely fine. Didn't even hit the limiters and I did give them a mighty good ragging. Lots of reggae/rnb/garage etc to really push them and theyre still not even at max.

I'm finicky as anything, but I'm really happy with them. Theyre small, lightweight, powerful and really simple to use. And they've got that HK magic about them. I've had loads; the Actor Mk1, Elias PX, tons of the Lucas systems etc and this is by far my favourite system as for me it covers all bases perfectly. It's got its good and bad points, but the bad points are purely superficial and the pros outweigh the cons by a mile. I'd recommend them for my sort of needs any day of the week. Anything more than 800-1000 people though, or if your expecting more then maybe look at the Pulsar or Contour gear. Good stuff but neither were my cup of tea and either didn't have what I wanted in them or were purely overkill budgets and needs wise. The L5 ticked every box so I went with that.

More importantly, if anyone else local to me wants to demo the system drop me a pm!

Most small subs will have heaps of output behind - that's the nature of long wavelengths
