Is it so, that low vas drivers are generally better for hogs (or other small chamber scoops)?

So far I have tested RCF lf18x400, Fane 18SB and Fane col 18xs prime in our hogs.. but not sure if there is something far off from optimal with these drivers.  18SB Hog is now in my friends livingroom and yes, it is pretty loud and goes low.  I have NOT tested those other drivers in same room but I can say that spl wise, SB is not far away if at all!  Why? Well, at least it has lowest VAS.  And I think it has cleanest sound also.

18XS, well.. 18x400 is louder but 18XS is cleary more physical making your hairs and clothes vibrating much more (less BL, more  uncontrolled cone displacement?)

Maybe I should get 1850's to get some reference, looks like 1850 is still somekind of horn driver standard :)

Generally looking at the EBP of the driver will tell you what it will sound like, higher EBP more spl faster transients all around "sharper" sound with a bit loss in the lowest freq.
Lower EBP and BL slower rumbling sound, sounds subbier but try playing some techno or similar you will think the kick is out of time.
Offcourse there are other factors, amps etc.

So more experience with different drivers is required maybe.. However..

Single HOG scoop playing some trance:

And some low tones (sorry about the darkness but same setup as in previous video):

This Hog is equipped with Fane col 18SB,  driven by QSC USA 850 (bridged), so pretty much "medium" stuff there.  Indeed there is slowiness, but hey it's just a hog without kickbin anyway :)

Hey Gents, I'm stuck between the P audio SD18 and the B&C 18TBX100, same price, which will be sonically superior? Powered by SAE PCM20 with 4 boxes per amp.

According to specs, SD18 should be better scoop driver.. but they say xmax is only 5mm which seems quite low. Or is it really so low?

P.Audio use the most conservative definition of Xmax, B&C use a more optimistic one, so they're not directly comparable. If you calculated the B&C with the same method as the P.Audio, it would only be 6.5mm.
If you calculate them both with the RCF/18Sound type definition, the P.Audio would be 8.6mm and the B&C 9.5mm (Assuming we're talking about the SD18-1700EL and not any of the other older SD18's).

SD18-1700EL has Qts as high as 0.59, Vas 98litres, BL 25.91...  pretty much confusing driver overall. -Good for reflex but propably not my first choice for scoops.  I think it will lack some brutality and "punch" in HOG but who knows.
