One thing I was wondering, Im thinking about running four low-mid drivers series/parallel so 4 times 400w drivers = 1600w @ 8ohm

Would you recommend say 4mm2 due to high wattage? Or is it only ohms we need to look at?

@ 20M you will loose 3% (ish) @ 2G5 and 2% (ish) @4G, so I wouldn't worry, the above data show impendence is the killer for power loss not CSA so much...

1600 @ 8r that is some mid amp you have!!Smile

Pity the above link isn't working, I have posted the same on here, I've a few post, prob worth just checking them all...

What you'll rapidly find is :-

Use CSA (cross sectional area) in the UK we use 1.5mm2, 2.5mm2 and 4mm2 as descriptors for cabling, AWG is a Sepo thing and actual diameter is just bloody useless!

get you head into mm2 per driver space, 4 runs of 20m 1.5mm feeding 4 hogs @1500W/8r is a lot better than 1 4mm run feeding 4 hogs @6000W/2r!!!

that said, we don't really use 1.5mm for PA, it is fine for top drivers, but unless you want to play different types of lead for HF and the rest you are better off just using 2.5m or bigger.

depending of your rig layout, mine uses NL8 for PA and I run out to the stacks on 4mm and link with 2.5mm, mons are all NL4 bi-amp on 4g2.5, but if you have nl4s on all your cabs consider just using 4g2.5mm for everything, you can short 1+<>1-, 2+<>2- for heavy bins to give you 5mm for higher power, if you do use NL4 all round, make bloody sure to label your shit up well, in a SUB,Kik,Mid,Hi  system coloured coded looms (just tape 4 NL4 cables together) with like Brown for Sub, Red for Kik, Orange for Mid and yellow for Hi, use 1 band of brown, 2 of red, 3 of orange etc so in crap light you can still see and put coloured paint patches on the boxes so "helpers" can get it right..

if you can void linking 18s below 4r, a patch panel on your amp rack and 2 runs of cable is better than a single run @ 2r!

if you must use 2 core cable use NL2FX connectors, Never put an NL2MP on a box as NL4s can't mate with it, but an NL2 can mate with an NL4!!!

One the subject, don't bother with anything more than 2.5mm on driver wiring in boxes, soldering 2x4mm to a tag is a pain and the difference between 4 and 2.5mm over the distance in a cab can't hardly be measured, let alone heard!

Link now Happy!!!!! xx

I know there's been lots of discussions about this before but I somehow can't find any old threads to read. I know someone once posted a chart showing the loss in different length and diameter cable at 8 / 4 / 2 ohm loads.

Can anyone point me to the topic or give the basic theory of deciding cable thickness for 20m runs at 4/8 ohms ..

Thanks
