I just came across to there designs on  http://www.speakerplan.com/ - www.speakerplan.com and am interested in building 1850 or 186 Horn. (later in text just 1850)

My goal is to make this low frequency speaker for "home outdoor use" and low amount of people (max 10-20) which want high "dB" listening., and here are some questions:

Because 1850 are low frequency speakers 50 -200 Hz, can SINGLE 1850 be used together with two (stereo) speakers (mid and high f). Compared to subwoofers, 1850 horn is higher frequency, so my question is: can single 1850 be used together with two (left and right) mid/high speakers or two (left and right) 1850 horn are required

1850 plans on web page have section called "batten/removable back" I presume this is only for putting speaker inside and that this batten/real plate must be always closed (like compression part of the box which helps speaker itself- air damping)

Also is 186 Horn drawing awailable with angles (like 1850 drawing).

If listener wants even lower frequencies, what about combination of 1850 horn with classical subwoofer which is filtered to work from 20 Hz to 50 Hz..

for 10 to 20 people you will be better off building a ported box.it will go low and be smaller IMO

Going below 50 Hz is not that important to me, and there is no problem with size, single or two 1850 horns are ok regarding the size.

But in general single 1850 horn with two/mid top speakers (left and right) are they any good would it sound satisfactory.

are you sure you don't just want to build a reflex bass box with two (L+R) mid tops?

a reflex would be much easier, quicker and cheaper to build and will be a lot easier to move around.

for crowds that size you don't really need to build a horn and spend loads on a PD1850 driver! and for crowds that size yes I think one bass speaker and two mids will sound fine, especially as sub/bass is usually in mono anyway.

I did not mean to buy PD driver actually plain is to make 186 housing with any compatible driver, for example celestion drivers suitable can be found for 150 -200 $.

What bass reflex box would be your preference please link me drawing, if possible iwth frequency response.  Are you referring  to two bas reflex boxes, or subwoofer + two boxes (because you claim frequencies below horn 1850).  I mean are you referring to particular vented box from speakerplans.com ?

Goal is to make really loud outdoor system for around 20 ppl.

I would have thought any reflex box would be fine..you could probably get away with a 15" box.

I recently built a couple of these 18" reflex boxes which were very simple! and loud with Fane Collosus 18XB drivers.

Interesting,.. Hmm it seems they can easily go up to  200 Hz (which is not that usual for vented box.

Driver itself is not that cheap, but all in all linked vented box is not much smaller compared to single 1850 horn.

For mid/top range I also plane to build it myself, wonder what to choose, mt122 seems not to complicated to build (not curved plywood used) , and all in all I can order professional cuts of all plywood elements.

Do you maybe have photos of the construction of 18XB box ? Datasheet drawing is very hard to read, not even marked "vent" itself.

What about tapped horn compared to vented box and classic horns?

Hey, here's a photo of the speakers....excuse the unfinished varnishing, finishing and logos!

The mid tops were also very simple. I built 12" versions but the plans are for 15" versions:

Yes sorry my knowledge of reflex boxes isn't the best so that's the only design I properly know...I'm sure there are ones for cheaper drivers etc.

Hi, very niceTongue

Do you use original crossover from fane for mid /high box, do you know what type of filter is there what order ? I presume there is bafle response compensation as I see resistors.

What about making thing not that simple, tappered horn for examplethis design seems very appealing (making something not that usual)

All in all if horn is around 105 dB/1W/1m, what about vented box ?

Edit: I came across something MUCH more simpler to make, no complicated angles, and above 105dB/1W/1m, this is hybrid horn reflex kind of box..
What do you think about this ?

Hi, no I used a Beyma FD250 crossover..couldn't find the Fane crossover and emailed Fane but they didn't respond so just bought Beymas! It's a superb crossover; adjustable.

And yeah those designs look good!

hi,

Whats lowest frequency those 15" left and right speaker can go ? PDF document claims 40 Hz
Do you use any high pass filter and those "satellites" is it necessary to be used ?

In general, what bass /woofer drivers (in what type of box) are allowed to be used without high pass filter ? For example 1850 needs 24db/oct high pass filter to remove frequencies below 40 Hz not to destroy the driver.

Is that needed for this 15" s in vented boxes?

One more thing:

Because human ear is most sensitive at 1 kHz per SPL in dB, and sensitivity drops with frequency, in PA audio systems, what are the ratios ? For example if at 1kHz it is chosen that at certain distance 100 dB is enough ,how mush dB at for example 50 Hz would be required

youre opening a can of worms here son.... its a big old learning curve and theres tons and tons to learn. but measured responce and the preseived responce are two different beasts. down near 40hertz youre gonna want about 4x the power of midrange to make you THINK its more balanced.

i'll let someone with more know how break it down for ya.....

If it sounds like a gorilla is trying to escape, turn it down.
