186 pros
- play higher (depending on taste - up to 200)
- smaller
- less expensive to load

186 cons
- won't load below 45-ish (but with 12 this won't concern you), 50 in doubles.

sbh pros
- play lower
- requires better drivers (forcing you to buy quality which is good in the long run)

sbh cons
- won't play as high, more than likely need upper bass cabs
- huge
- big group delay spike down low (though probs out of range for your content)
- more expensive to load

hth

Don't get me wrong, i do like the sound of the 186s (as far as i can tell until now with only 4 built)
But i was wondering if there is an even better sounding solution for us Wink

unless going 2 way bass (subs and kicks), 186 is your best option.

Yeah that was kinda my thought. So wouldnt it be best to build only like 8 of the 186s and throw in 4 SBH (or something similar)?

don't bother with sbh, keep it simple.

How about bandpass horns? USBs or Double ES18s?

Throwing in a bunch of sbh with the 186's is like having a Porsche, but buying also a Mercedes thinking the Porsche will be faster if u have the other car.

Or actually it might just transform the Porsche into a tractor if you are unlucky enough

The number of people who recommend SBHs, is only matched by the number of people selling them on FB, on a monthly basis.

If the SBH were so hot, people wouldn't be selling them so frequently.

5x years ago, there were not many drivers around, that allowed single 186 Horn, to drop with force, below 48hz, now there are.

Stop listening to uninformed hearsay, and start looking at specs of drivers like:

Oberton 18XB1600,
Oberton 18XB1300,
Void V18-1000,
PD 1851.

Build 1x 186 Horn, with standard 18" Bolt pattern, and try it with few drivers.

We've already built 4 of them using 18sound 18lw1400 drivers. Might try different drivers for the future builds :)

18lw1400 is "not really ideal" in those horns..
try v18-1000, 18xb1500 or other high dedicated horn drivers?
btw. 1850 horns might be better for your style of music and these drivers tbh., tighter chamber to suit tighter drivers and response..

mhh ok.
What exactly makes those other drivers better suited? Is the difference to the 18lw1400 so big that it is worthwhile to replace the 4 existing ones, or should we just use other drivers for the next 8?
