I prefer the 80's and 90's when all you needed to rock a crowd was a pair of technics and a mixer.
Nowadays it's a laptop that mixes itself and the crowd all sat down, and on their phones! |

The number of kids that stand (wobble) in front of me as the music is about to drop waving their phones in the air recording the moment, i say recording, just capturing distorted out of focus rubbish images of whats about to happen as I reach for the strobe button... I feel like jumping over the barrier and shouting at them... "FFS... turn it to landscape at least, have you NO artistic sensibilities... " I then have a chuckle to myself and remember that when I used to be in their position, someone usually pulled out a bottle of poppers and we all had a healthy draught... and then we probably all fell over.. :-)

1996 was definitely my era, never did trust those Denons was witch craft 2006 is a definitive picture, lids on the 1210s closed and a set of CDJs being used on top of them
Totally agree there, one of the last gigs I did, had everyone live streaming / sitting on Facebook, so so different from the 90s

Ones that p!$$ me off are the youngsters that arrive at any kind of do (kids parties, 18ths, 21sts, weddings, proms) and defiantly sit there all night with their headphones in their ears making no attempt at all to join in, just shutting themselves away from the world. Bit that I do like is when I play tunes that grab their attention and they all start holding their phones up so that they can Shazam the tune |

Please do not put all "the youngsters" in the same basket
example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBLFnIk8bd4 the crowd is pretty young and well alive @ 5 am well many reached their phone to record this last tune but that's it maybe I don't go to the kind of parties you're talking about |

I totally agree.. yesteryear was so much better... just look at this afwull video, totally no participation from the crowd whatsoever.. especially at around 2.30.
Things are moving, if you don't see it you are visiting the wrong places.. great article though. Edited by Bams - 28 June 2017 at 1:44pm |

Deffo no what I said. Have done school proms in a hotel for the last 3 Fridays (age group 15-16) and another 4 proms to go; even with the floor rammed are there always some (note, SOME ) that want no part of it but instead wrap themselves in their own world determined not to be swerved away from what they have decided is what they want. And yes, maybe you don't go to the kind of parties of which I speak. I don't specialise although I can (Lovers, RnB, 60s), I provide entertainment and much of is is family-oriented; they're generally over by 12 midnight, 2am is a late one. I also work 4 5 6 times a week - kids and school discos in the afternoons, regular karaoke jobs, corporate hotel work; this week Thurs. school disco in two 90 minute sessions from 5 until 8.30, Fri. school prom at city centre hotel, Sat. kids disco 12-3, country house wedding 7-12.30, Sun. kids disco 1-4 and then karaoke 8.30-1am. Next week I have two corporate jobs booked in mid-week where I have to provide my full disco with lights and I'll be lucky if 10 people dance (because they're all eying each other up and deciding in which bedroom they're going to sleep) and I'll have to set the disco after daytime conferences with the AV company getting their gear out at the same time. So you're damn right, we do different kinds of parties And my ppl raise they're phones so that they can find out what I'm playing, not to 'record the moment' |

Around this way there would be about seven or eight dj's fighting over the gigs you have this week, all trying to undercut each other. I've pretty much knocked it on the head now and just take the odd gig that I know I'll enjoy these days. It's nice to see the mobile disco scene is still doing well in other parts of the country!
