Hi all,

I have a wavefront system (6 W8C, 12 WS218X).

Processing / Amp racks (X 2 of these)

- Linea Research ASC48
- Jam B8 (channel A runs 12”, B runs 6” and D runs 1” with channel C unused) - I run 2 or 3 W8C on this configuration per amp - so 8ohm 12” ~1100w, 16ohm 6” ~550w and 16ohm 1” ~550w) - the ASC48 limiters and gains are set well and they never sound stressed, even at full chat.

- Jam Q10 x 2 running one WS218X per channel (~2200w per box. / 1100w per driver)… 2 spare channels for W3P fills as required.

I know they aren’t the last word in amplifiers, but I am honestly impressed by them in general - huge bang for buck and really don’t sound bad with very good noise floor & zero hiss.

Having said that… I’m considering upgrades (I have just ordered 4 Admark AD442s for the bass end).

The B8s running the W8Cs sound pretty damn good to be fair, bags of headroom - but I wonder if there is anything better… I do want to stick with class D (weight) and 4 channel, but can be 2U. Also, don’t want anything with a DSP that could add latency.

Options:

  1. Keep the B8 - they sound good, great power vs size - and in fact more power per channel than most top line amps I can find. The big/small/big/small power outputs fit the use case well too.
  2. Use the Q10s for the W8C - even more headroom.
  3. Martin VIA5004 - Badge goes with the stack (being a tart), obviously a top flight amp (Linea I think, without the DSP which I don’t need) - but power a fair way down compared to the B8 - surprisingly cheap new.
  4. Older Powersoft M50Q or Void VQ - nice but a bit old, and again power is down a fair way compared to the B8.
  5. Lab Gruppen FP6000Q - as above, nice, but power down compared to the B8

Any suggestions?
Am I just being a rack tart?

I can’t afford new powersofts LOL - and the above roughly come in under £2k each.

The systems genuinely does sound super clean as-is, with loads of headroom on the W8C - the subs can definitely deliver a bit more, hence the order of the Admarks for that role.

I have not used one of the Jam amps. I have used FFA 6004  many timeson the bigger W8 and they sound fantastic. That is with dB mark xca+ so not as good as your Linea. See if you can borrow an FFA.

That was the other option I was looking at that I forgot to add to the post - but would prefer one of the ones Alf Ligwa sold with the black face (because I'm a rack tart and pink would clash).

At the moment yes but they are in the Enlightened Auction that ends next week so you could test it over the weekend if you wanted.
