ive decided to use mt121 for my mids in a 4 way system. ive decided to cross the speaker and compression driver at 1.6khz (too high?)
im going to use an online crossover calculator to find out what components i need. what is the best one to use out of these or does it not matter? ![]() |

Its a bit of a black art the whole passive crossover thing.
The higher order slope the more component you, need what makes a bigger, heaver more expensive unit. At a guess 2nd or 3rd order would work but the type of slope is a whole other kettle of fish

How are you going to handle time aligning the 12" flare/Compression driver ?

Or just use an LMS, and do it the "proper" way.

I'm building a preamp at the moment too. Should I make it 5 way and run it that way?

Hi all, just reviving this. Can anyone advise whether/why the MT 121 needs a x-over? Can't that happen at the amp/processor stage like the MT 122? Sorry if that's a really dumb question.
If the MT 121 definitely needs a passive x-over, what has everyone used? Thanks so much!

Would personally suggest it's the worse idea in the world, using passive xover with MT121. Either do things properly, with a "decent" LMS, or just build a 2x12" reflex cab, with 1.4" on top.

10 years ago that would definitely be a dumb idea. But today if you are able to do a FIR correction file for the box, passive crossover can be a brilliant idea.

From personal experience, wonderous sound and SPL, even outside at distance, can be obtained, by matching right 12"/2" Comp and flare, in MT121, and then using half decent LMS (Not DCX), to tune delays, xovers, flatten response per section. If drivers are upgraded, no problem adjusting smoothing eq in LMS. Add to that mix, "right amplifiers", on the 12" and the comp, you can cover 5000 ppl, with only 8x MT121s. I'm guessing these days, guys would carry 20x line array tops, to do same thing. Rig owner's choice of course, but was doing the above, with mate's system, for over 10x years.
