I seem to remember using one or two of them back in the early '70's with some Graphic Artists to do 'moving backdrops' for Bands....

Malc, Ian
from memory - Triacs

Didn't have LV lighting back then as used Theater Lighting fittings so could use Gels for best colours to match the paint, but also ran UV flourescents with pre-heat transformers added into them.....

Triacs were not common back then in lighting control. Posh dimmers used 2 SCR's to get full wave control.

No Ian a single SCR will not work an inductive load, but as Mik states back then only resistive loads were really used.

I built a SCR lighing controller from a kit at when at school. Scared the crap outta the old lady!! Then modded it with larger SCR's to controll multiple 500W lamps.  Oooo. days gone by.

I'd love to see inside that gadget. Go ask for a PIC Ian!!!!!

Back to back thyristers still outperform Triacs for surge current performance!
