Greetings people and a happy new year to y all.
I am on my way to build my first 4 way sound. Subs are Rob Mogale's SS18 design loaded with Fane's XB18. Now for the kick section, initially I was going for the ES18BPH build, but after reading some negative comments online I want to ask some more people, maybe those who used them can share some knowledge. Whats your opinion on them to be used on kick section, do you know other good designers/plans I could search for? playing roots and dub music for reference. kind regards |

Have you looked at the Cubo kick 15? I built a pair earlier in the year and have been really impressed with them. Worth considering at the very least anyway.

I m looking at the Cubo 15 and its a very interesting design, I will look into it.
On the website is actual Cubo that build those designs and he answered a lot of questions on that topic. Worth looking https://www.freespeakerplans.com/kunena/7-general-forum/20750-cubo-kick-15?start=0 Thanks for the recommendation |

Great website with good resources. Thank you
It has many interesting designs, I was into hd15 from Rob Mogale, as also to build a single hd215. Heard them on a dance combined with 18'' Scoops was pretty nice vibe. Now, I am looking at Cubo 15, similar to Hd15 , a bit lower freq response |

The 18'' from Mogale in my opinion need no recommendation.

It does depend a bit on what sort of tunes you're playing and the kind of sound that you're after. I went from reflex 15s to es18s and back to reflex. The es18s do make a lot of noise and can sound good on certain genres but I could never get rid of the bph sound and get them to sound sweet on everything. They also limit your options of tops
The double 15 reflexes on the other hand always sound great, they're really versatile, can be used as subs for smaller gigs and integrate easily with just about any tops. But you do have to sacrifice a bit of efficiency.

Cubo is efficient for sure, but I personally am looking for something that could play a little higher, and with a better response. Same thing with the c-2d pro, very efficient, but the graph isn't great without a lot of correction for the rising response (from the high tuned reso I think?) Of course, what looks good doesn't mean what sounds good, I'd wager both the cubo and c-2d sound pretty nice in the right circumstances
I originally wanted to maybe make an altec 816 but it looks like the eminence 15 midbass is a better design, and suited for higher power. Still there's probably some better designs out there, since my driver is a beyma 15mcb700 i'll likely just put it in a selenium-like diffraction horn and stack it with my existing top, use more of the upper bandwidth since it measures so well. Probably depends on which drivers you use for which box would be best (without modification) so maybe start out with that, and your goal of which kick freq to use, and then reference which drivers and enclosures look good in that response range. That's my approach for now at least. Good to hear about the 18" mogales, epic for sure.

Hello Tea,
I m building my sound around jamaican ska, rocksteady and roots music. By sacrificing a bit of efficiency I suppose you refer to the energy and to the power given to the reflexes in correspondence to the es18's or any other horn, loaded kick. I ve experienced horn loaded bins in small venue of 100-200 people and it sounded nasty and at points was uncontrollable between tunes. The bass section felt boring. With the same system - same place but with reflex on, we got much better control in the low end, clearer sub-kick section and more musicality overall. In an outdoor session though, louder scene, horn bins worked smoother because I think the sound had the space to move and bounce of nicely. There are many factors to consider, but yes, reflex is one good choice to consider also. Thank you for the informantion |
