I went to a computer shop I trust to ask more or less this question the other day and their answer was unless you just want it for browsing and not a lot else you would be better off with something else as the performance is pretty terrible.
Their advice was to get a 12" standard laptop (no Atom processors) with sensible specs and it will be better in the long run and have better resale value. Stu

Well they are called "net" books for a reason... they are designed for web browsing (which nowadays is about 80% of the use of most home pcs).
Actually they are not 'that' bad at other things, I have open office, winamp, vlc, artweaver (free lightweight photoshop clone), smaart, easera and a bunch of other stuff on mine.... (Dell Mini 9, Atom 1.6ghz, 1gb RAM).
Sometimes it has a little pause for thought, but it's more than usable for most tasks... and a bloomin bargain at £200 or whatever it cost me (I bet you lose more than that over 3 years on a decent 12" laptop!).
The only thing that limits its use really is the fact thats its so small and has no internal cd drive (but who the hell uses optical media any more, right?
Great for travelling with, and with a solid state hard drive.. pretty damn robust too.
It feels like such a palava getting my "big" laptop out compared to this mini, it's more like getting a book out... and the battery lasts forever too (about 4-5 hours of web browsing).

Eventually I've narrowed it down to the samsung q320.
Not cheap but the cheapest with acceptable spec for my requirments. It seems you either get great spec and doggy poo graphics card - or good graphics with less spec. Unless you have lots of dollar. And I neeeed a good graphics card. I like the 13.4" screen also, best of both worlds i reckon - a proper pc in a small box that you can still see... plus less to sit on! |

I run all my lighting and laser control off an Acer Revo 3600 which is Atom powered and it does a fine job of it with XP and 1GB of RAM. You just need to make sure you understand the limitations of what you're buying. And for £145 it is a bargain

mine runs most things fine, do plan to drop in some more ram to bring it up to 2gb soon enough though, as it does get a bit laggy.
i got it mostly for taking notes in lessons though, and the battery easily lasts me 6-8 hours of moderate usage.

If you are getting an Atom powered netbook/PC/server, then look for one with the Atom N330 processor. It's a dual core processor with hyper-threading (OS sees it as 4 cores) and in tests that I have done it performs as fast, if not faster in some cases, as a 3Ghz Pentium 4.
