First open up the partition manager ("my computer" -> manage -> disk management. Check whats happening. Could be that the disks have just lost their drive letter assignments. .... can happen with USB devices. There's a little util - forgot whats its called - USBXXXX anyway ..... will clear out all the USB mass storage device enumerations .... all HD's and memory sticks etc. will get re-detected (found new hardware") ...... might just fix your problem. Otherwise yeah use some kind of Linux to go take a look. |

Personally, get a a 2TB SATA HDD, unplug your PC HDD, plug in 2 TB, load win XP (Win 7 may be quick as you don't need a key) then remove both USB drives from their caddies...
Download hiren's boot CD, burn ISO to CD or load onto USB stik...
Connect both un-usb'd HDDs to the sata ports on your main board and boot into XP, then stuff the hiren's CD (or Stick) in and run "get-bak-Fat32" or "get-back-NTFS" wait....
if the HDDs aren't physically shafted that you can recover data sector by sector even if the FAT table is trashed...
You need the 2TB to dump your recovered files to....
Use a clean load of XP just in case you have some dum virus blocking the storage detection bit...
