Time alignment is all about distance. You will get your headphone signal at the speed of light, where as anything you listen to outside of your headphones will be at the slow normal speed of sound. If you take your active monitor and put it down at the back of the hall, it will be delayed, so as you might see now, active or passive has nothing to do with the delay that you hear.

+ 1 tony, the only time ive had issues with monitors was when in one venue they were run 50m plus back to amp room, found it better to mix without them on..... as for passive or active, 99.9% of venues use active, in fact i cant name one in my 25 years of djing that was set up passive.... i cant see the gain or point, in extra amp processing etc.......
ooops got me passive and active wrong way round lol..... corrected

I use active monitors as you know Bee. Quick and easy and very loud for the very deff DJ! Just plug it into the back of the mixer, give him/her control of the booth volume and their you go..hassle free. I used to run JBL baby bum wedges with the 2206's, cant remember the model..needed to take a separate amp/processor etc so much hassle just to please un-entertaining jock. Install I should imagine is allot different, but on the road for me it has to be powered.

Apparently the others have been talking about powered loudspeakers, not bi-amped unpowered ones. Also, I bet my ass you will not be able to tell the time/delay difference between 50 metre and 5 metre loudspeaker cable:
Now if in the amp room they had some processing configured wrong, then it will be different story. Typical propagation delay through loudspeaker processor's AD, DSP and the is few milliseconds. Stand a metre away from the loudspeaker and you have another 3 milliseconds just from the distance between your ear and loudspeaker driver. Edited by pfly - 22 April 2013 at 10:10pm |

The thought did cross my mind as whether people were talking about powered speakers (amps inside) or active speakers, ( speakers that do not have a passive network inside ). However, whichever type of cab was being used, the laws of acoustics will still apply. cable runs won't make a scrap of difference, it's only the distance the cab is away from your ear that makes a difference.

All I am saying is from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, active monitors are far less hassle, and I have had far less issues with them.

I always take both, master and booth outputs from the DJ mixer to my "FOH" mixer usually situated somewhere behind the DJ and/or the stack(s) and connect DJ monitors to my console's auxes, this gives me versatility to also route a MC mic or any other signal to DJ monitors independently. Also this gives me nice control over DJ monitor EQ (by my Crest XR20's channels EQ) and levels, although 99,9% of times I only route the booth signal through my console at unity gain. When I do it like this I would only find it annoying to have two loudspeakers that needed "special" treatment than all other loudspeakers in the system, so unpowered speakers it is.
When connected straight to the booth output, powered loudspeakers have small advantage. Oh and nice looking speakers you have created Tony, once again! |
