Hey Lads,
I was in a club in Poland last weekend and came across this really cool effect akin to an LED wall but it was in fact made with normal Edison style light bulbs!

the thing that made it really cool for me is that the lights were controllable, they had patterns going across the wall like a LED wall would do, excuse my ignorance but is there an easy way of doing this with normal light fittings? I would love to use something similar myself!

Each lamp will be on a dimmer.
You simply use a DMX matrix controller to play the patterns.
Most desks/software these days has some way to program matrices intuitively.
The problem is that the number of dimmer channels required increases exponentially as the matrix grows, but in your favour, you only need 1 channel per 'pixel' rather than 3 for an RGB LED

so if I attached a dimmer to the back of each light fitting and rigged it up to something like chamsys it should all work fine?

(excuse my noobness!)

Showtec matrixsunstrip active

Showtec matrix and sunstrips do this really well, you can get very nice subtle low level tungstan colours from them that you'll never get from any led fixture.
blah blah blah blah blah......

Back in the day (Mid 80s) I had a controller for driving matrix walls and dance floors "Saturday night fever' style.

Inside the controller it had two banks of triacs, one bank would switch the lives (Phase) driving the matrix columns the other bank would switch the neutrals driving the rows, each lamp would have a diode in series and each lamp/diode was wired across a column and row as you would with an LED matrix (but with switched mains!!). This way 8 wires (4 rows & 4 Cols) would drive 16 lamps, 10 wires drives 25 lamps etc.

I cannot remember what make or model the controller was however It worked well and the matrix looked real cool, plus as each lamp had a diode in series they lasted forever….. although they flickered slightly.

I've got a mode matrix unit in the store, I was looking at it last night trying to bring myself to chuck it, the chances of me ever doing anything with it are very slim, especially as I seem to remember that it needs some kind of repair as well as a whole load of lamps to drive... so if anyones keen...
Keep pushing on, things are gonna get better.
