I´m intending to build two X15s to use over two g-subs. I´m going to use the "cheap alternative" drivers with the SN15MB for mid, BMD450 for hi and PH220 for horn but the Beyma FD 250 crossover instead of the VX1. I´ll buy the box pro TPC25 to cross the signal at 125 or 160 Hz. I´m going to play all kinds of music on the system including live-performances. Which crossoverfreq. will be the most suitable and how small can I make the box in the two cases? I don´t have a boxcalculator so I would be pleased if somebody could give me a minimum volume for the X15s in the two different cases! And the third thing, ofcourse, the length of the port in the two different cases! Happy to hear any replies since I believe that there is many guys waiting to hear the answer to this one!! Why go for that crossover, seems like total sh*t to me, no control for each frequency or gain on it and a fixed Behringer Super X pro cx2310 would be a better option as they have individual channel gains and high and low gains, phase reverse switch and they are as cheap as chips and pretty good quality too.Or Behringer cx3400 if you want a 3 way stereo x over. http://www.thomann.de/thoiw5_behringer_cx2310_super-x_pro_pr odinfo.html http://www.thomann.de/thoiw5_behringer_cx3400_super_x_pro_pr odinfo.html The 3 way behringer crossover has additional things like limiters and hf horn EQ on it and phase reverse and an adjustable delay for the bass. From the sims I've done I'd recommend optimising the SN15MB to play
from about 80Hz upwards. I think a volume of about 50L tuned to
about 75Hz would probably do it. This will allow you to easily
cross from 100Hz upwards. I like 120Hz as a crossover point
between reflex subs and X15's.
I also recommend making the boxes a wedge shape rather than the rather deep X15 trapezoid. I'm afraid I don't have a pic of mine which illustrates it easily available. If I build any more I reckon I can get them as small as a Nexo PS15 or very close. I would also probably go up to a 1.4" compression driver to get the crossover frequency down a little. Insomnia London is planning to build some as I describe above, can't remember how much detail there is on the thread but there are several threads on this topic already. Hope this helps! |
