Which MC2 amps are the best sound-wise / best suited for home usage? I know the S- series are (stupid me sold an S800 some time ago) and the MC2 650/1250 but what about the T-series and their rebrands? Can these be fitted with quiet fans as well? I know MC2 said years ago that they don't service the MC series anymore but there doesn't seem to be anything special in terms of parts in them, besides the PCB or the transformer itself.

For me the mc750 I have out performs the e series I have (4-75,e45.e90) in a hifi situation and is regarded in the hifi world as one of the best pro amps for sound quality. I think some of the parts are no longer available on the mc range, not sure which so that’s the reason mc2 don’t support them now, that’s what they told me anyway. Not saying you can’t fix them just I guess it’s to much hassle for them now, they are old I guess things move on. I guess the transformer would have to be custom made, possibly output stage components not made anymore (by who ever made them for them) if they are not using trusted parts by their own makers of it to their own specifications there are not going to have 100% confidence in their operation, spec or reliability I would assume.

Interesting, however I wouldn't be surprised if more folks chose the MC over the E series, I've seen the insides of an E- series and it's more of your typical lightweight touring powerhouse with SMPS and Class D output stage. I'm actually quite curious about the MC vs T series. I briefly went through the schematics I could find on the internet, and it all seems rather standard in terms of parts choice.

Smaller E series are not Class D but are Switch Mode PSU. They are now end of life at MC2 but still supported. Delta is Class D T series are Transformer PSU and analogue out. Transformers are not very big, in my opinion, as amp relies on plenty of volts for transients. But I have 2 x T1000 and 2 x T2000 at the moment! There is not a lot in a T series to to tweak in a Hi Fi sense! MC2 also make

Some of the E series were class D but yes, now discontinued.
Ultrafide you say? Great amps i’m sure but give it a posh name/chassis and a hefty price tag and it becomes ‘hifi’

The current "HSE" ones are bonkers priced, like 10 grand per amp? As said, from what I've seen in the schematics of the previous class AB models, these are still rather simple/crude but hefty built amps. No fancy audiophile 'high speed' op-amps or regulators but still simple NE, LM78/79 kind of stuff. From MC2's site: E60/90/100 are class D E15/25/475 are AB E45 is "Modified class H"

the t-series are nice amps for fixed installation, aimed AFAIK into the theatre and cinema market, they aren't mechanically great for touring, I've seen a few after being on the road and they dont fare well compared to the MC range with dented cases, loose transformers etc. Horses for courses. The MC range are tanks. (and microprocessor controlled BTW).
THe t's have several issues of pcb fitted, sanken outputs I think from memory? MC2 have always been very good with technical help and aftersales support and that's worth alot these days. Edited by kedwardsleisure - 19 July 2024 at 11:03am |
