For HiFi home use, I thinking of using a pair of HD15 (one for left, one for right) to complement a set of BLH main speakers (imagine a scoop driven by a 4 in. FR driver).
Since I only need about 95dB SPL, I would put a low pass 12 dB per octave filter at around 40Hz, so I would get an almost flat response curve between 40Hz and 80Hz, with a sharp drop over that point.
So basically, I'm trading efficiency for low-end response.
Now, I'm NOT looking for a kind of subwoofer, I just want bass (from around 40Hz) with some real SLAM (as in kick drum and double-bass plucking).
I would not use any high pass filter on the HD15, cause it will probably never see more than 2 watts.
Clearly, this is not a PA situation, cause the listening room is roughly 3m x 4m.
Before getting a pair of driver, I'd like to have opinions on that scheme... Do you think I will achieve what I'm looking for (i-e very fast transient bass, great impact, in a relatively small package)?
I know it's like killing a fly with a gun, but I just hate the way HiFi subs sound like slouches...
Thanks!

Yeah I agree most hifi subs under £1000 which are ready made, sound like utter s**te, nothing but 1 note booooooom and rumble.

From experience I used to have active subs like Paradigm,JPW,JBL, and they all sounded total crap.Just rumble they did and boomed like a cheapy car sub.lol

I used to have 4 HD15's and they were great for kick bass[mid bass] but lacked sub bass from below 70hz.I did try 1 a side on my rig and the bass was pretty weak.So I ended up selling them. But Dom says they only sound decent with proper power though them and in a stack of min 8.

So you better off using 1 X1 bandpass sub.

Or you could use a smaller sub like this  http://www.fane-acoustics.com/public_html/media/pdf_media/Ca binets15inch125L.pdf

uses a 15 inch Fane driver and is a compact reflex design.

Fane says for that hifi/permentant installation use of that bass bin you can use 18mm MDF.

which obviously fits all your criteria of very fast transient bass, great impact, in a relatively small package...

Your problem is not bass, it's that your BLH will not keep up to what you're looking for, as the transients go up much higher than you think.

Once you have grown used to what a nice (and I mean nice) clean small PA top does, you'll never look back from a 4" FR (which is nice for background music though).

If you wanted something really nice for that, have a look at Staipers BPH or something similar, as you'll want to cross as high as possible (200Hz is the minimum)

If you want the "fast", sound, roll off bass at 50Hz 3-6dB per octave indoors or have it measured flat (which is rather rare and generally implies tricked large room or outdoors.

Putting the problem the other way, my diminutive back loaded Fostex horn provides a very snappy response down to 70 or 80Hz (with very very good transients) and no sub I tried (and own, JBL and Cerwin-Vega, all ported) can keep up with the "speed" of the horn. So, for my own taste, the tiny Fostex is simply perfect. (OK I know, it's far from perfect from an absolute perspective and nothing will even come close to a proper compression front horn, with horn mids and bass and ST)
The X1 looks nice, but it's much too big.
In order to get something smaller, I'm ready to forget low bass and high efficiency, but I absolutely want to keep fastness, and the only receipe I know (to move air FAST in mid bass) calls for large cone area, light cone, big magnet (i-e low Qts).
Horn loading (even though not a "real" horn) gives extra hoomph as the big cone is more efficiently coupled to the outside air than any ported or bandpass box.
So the question remains, did anybody tried to low-pass a HD15 at 40Hz? If not, I'll just make a pair and see what's happening. And if it doesn't work, well, I'll still have the drivers to play around!

I think it will work. As you don't need PA SPL but you can throw some power to the speaker (to compensate the lowish output at 40Hz) you can get a response to 40Hz or even lower. To get it flat you will have to do more than that. I think you'll need a digital LMS (a cheap one does it, like the Behringer UltraDrive) because you WILL have to equalize your room AND the HD15. The HD15 will play to around 65Hz in single outdoors, which means you can't get flat response by simly putting a 12dB filter. In addition, INDOORS in such small rooms, the loading of the HD15 is better, so it will play lower, but how low and how the plot looks is unpredictable then. So you need something to measure your room with the HD15 (once only) and something to tune the output of the HD15 (like the Behringer unit).

For 40 to 80Hz use, one HD15 would be enough....

Hint: Take a good pair of cans (headphones) and play around with an EQ and find out what influences the "speed" of the sound.

Then listen to a good system (anythnig that takes your fancy) and A/B the headphones. Even though the good system will likely sound much more spacious (excepting binaural recordings), the real limitation to what you might describe as subjective speed is the room, and there is not all that much you can do about that. Killing the bass will do more harm to the overall sound in general, and the only real cure for that is a large, well proportioned listening room, a rare luxury.

Just some thoughs (and Yes, HD15 and EQ will be fine, but you can just as well take a waay-under-tuned bass-reflex (quasi sealed) if that is what you're after. If I feel particularily benevolent towards the neighbours, I stuff half my Achenbach BR subs' vents, adjust the EQ to match and let some Recording of works by Franck, Bach or for that extra bit of umpf Messiaen loose on thine joyfull (g)neighbour (that is after giving the PA a thorough test of SJ Radio material)

karlson provide high-impact - if drivers are strong - but norrmal tuning puts f6 outdoors around 55Hz in my yard (which has a hillside dropoof only a couple of meters from my measuring position)

a stock 2-way K15 w. farily high xover (1K6 - 3K) will play awesome techno and rap kickdrum assuming low mass/low Le driver

"eXemplar" re-tuned K15 with 2-3"ID rt.angle pvc vents an an adaptor board to fit over the regular vent, loaded cabinet with 515 (416 did ok for me) and applied bandpass boost centered around 30 to augment VOT

not sure how either tuning would mate with a little BLH as have never owned one other than homemade mess bult 40yr ago- but low tuning w. kluged boost from EV interface box was very nice with theatre organ cds with a small karlson w. 12" and 80Hz electronic xover  -  was run in mono with cheap 20w/channel  JC Penny receiver.

stock tuned karlson are clean but deficient in lowest pipe organ tones  - old iron law of bulk vs efficiency

heres a k15 size outdoors sans shelf refinement loaded with older Eminence 18  at 110W nominal input/50Hz - overtones are about 2%

dip would not look as severe if ~5" board is inserted above baffle and/or if cabinet tilted forwards

I don't know the significance of low distortion on sine vs music tracks - some pa horn measure 10X worse than this 1 sheet box

some little karlson with slit vents do poor on sine but 'ok' on music

outdoors plot
