Hi there, in theory if one was to copy the exact volume and port dimensions of a cab (such as the X12) and the use these figures to design a totally different shape of cab, but still using the same drivers reccommended, then would it work sufficiently as a cabinet ?

If you don't make it to ridiculously, it will work fine. Cheers |

ok cheers, and do the shapes of the ports matter (ie. can i change them from being round to square, as long as area still the same) also does the location of the ports have any effect on the sound (can they be positioned anywhere)?

at a very high, audiophile level, yes
at the level i reckon you're working to, not at all like mobiele said, as long as you don't do anything too radical you won't notice a difference. round ports are the ideal, but other shapes should be fine, assuming they're fairly basic (i.e. no love-heart shaped ports or anything poncey like that ;) ) also don't make ports too narrow or you'll get whistles and hissing. placement of the ports around the cabinet doesn't really matter too much either, but check that the placement of ports and bracing isnt creating any volumes inside that would act like resonators (i.e. like a bandpass) overall, if you keep things intuitive and don't mess about too much you will do fine.... |
