I had a bit of a scare when i took my cabs out of the garage the othwer week after a bit of a lay up over the winter. There was mould everywhere and i thought it was because of damp in my garage.
However when i inspected drivers and things they were all good and fine.
Turened out it was the yeast in the spilt beer had started to grow. you could see the tracks and runs quite clearly. Hot water and a little washing up liquid sorted them out.
I am willing to bet it wasnt the yeast you saw.. The beer provided moisture or nutrition for various moulds.. Besides.. Stuff like Carlsberg, Heinecken etc. is pasteurised, IOW the yeast is dead..
The trick to see the diff. between yeast and mould is:
Yeasts typically just show up as spots, but moulds show up as green, brown, black or white fur.. The color depends on the species
Re: Cleaning cabs: Warm water, dish soap and possibly a follow-up with some window cleaner to get rid of the old tobacco "goo"..
Re: Caustic soda. Last time i came across that stuff was in my old 2 stroke motorbiking days. We used to fill the exhausts with it to remove all the black carbon build ups in the pipe. Evil stuff, gets your eyes and skin real bad.
Caustic Soda = NaOH = Sodium Hydroxide.. One drop of 30% solution in the eye takes approx. 6 hours at the hospital + a 16£ bottle of stuff to drip in the eye
I'd strongly suggest staying away from this:
Its very degreasing - it dries up your skin fast
Its very harmful at skin or eye contact
It will turn your fingernails a purplish red
It corrodes aluminum
It can give milk a funky orange color..
If you do decide to play with this:
Safety goggles
Rubber apron and gloves
Eye wash bottles or a fresh water hose on standby
and PLEASE take care when pouring the pellets into the bucket of water - if you do it too fast, the heat from the dissolving processes going on can generate a steam explosion launching hot, corrosive stuff all around you..
