Greets, anyone out there who has built, or heard, the Selenium 15" straight horns. They're appealing because the high end x-point is more flexible than a HD15, though they're very deep. We want something with plenty of punch thats not going to lose the detail up in its range..be nice to x-over at 220ish..We would be running them on top of scoops..with those long horns (and no time delay available) is phase going to be a (noticeable) issue? Be very nice to know how they sound before deciding anything, cheers, Jeth |

I have 8..in 4 double cabs...for sale or hire...
They sound really superb...better, IMO, than any HD15s I've heard...But they are a good sight bigger and heavier! I have no plans to take them out again anytime, but if you want to hire them, get in touch... |

in theory i think they should play ok up to 6 or 7 hundred hz, never tested this mind, they can take fairly weak drivers if you realy want to, abit like martin 115, but al ittle straighter, personaly im confused why julz is the only person ive ever heard of owning any, [will change soon, or did, but just 2 doesnt count does it!] id recommend them, but you might want to check for any other possibilitys, then when you decide the 1505c1 is what your after, you know what youve got something better than, i plan on playing em 80<300hz, edit..... can some one do me a massive favor, in a few weeks pester me to post up the pics of the 2 [shoddy 2 day wonders] i thrown together, im getting a lead for the g/f camera in a couple of weeks, so ill post up a few pics then! [like i said some one hassle me in about 2weeks. Edited by coner - 17 May 2006 at 7:50pm |

I have used them both as bass bins (in groups of 4) and as kick
bins...either, and usually, in lines of 4 or occasionally as pairs....
They do work down to 45Hz, or so, but the horn length says around 100Hz...so I guess they become unloaded below that! At the upper end, I've tried them higher than the 220-250Hz that I usually use them up to, and they do go higher...from memory I'd say about 450Hz is the upper limit before they start to get very "beemy" and honky. Normally, they are used above PD1850 folded horns and under MT122s/OHM TRS212s...so the PD1850s run upto 120Hz, then the Seleniums run 120-220/250Hz and the 12" drivers run >220Hz I've never done a direct A/B comparison against HD15s, but the HDs I've heard sound a little "boxy" over the same sort of frequencies than the Seleniums...Also, if you are only planning a couple of drivers/boxes, then the Seleniums seem to work much better than the HDs...I suspect the HDs come into their own in larger stacks... Personally, I love 'em...I bought the cabs from someone local who had built them but ran out of room to store them and for quite a while they remained virtually unused....Then I "discovered" their potential! Mine are loaded with PD158 (4 horns) and Eminence Kappa 15 (not the lf) (4horns) which were selected before the PD158s were available and on a cost basis. On paper they seemed to be the only Eminence driver ideally suited to working in a horn with a very small rear chamber. The difference between the 2 drivers, over the frequency ranges I use them at, are minimal...I got the PD158s on a deal (surplus stock, 16ohm drivers...just what I wanted) whereas I paid normal discounted price for the Kappas (4ohm US versions, specially ordered)...That made the PDs better value at pretty much a similar cost...However, at regular prices, the PDs are almost twice the Eminence price and, at that, the Kappas would be the ones I would select again. Never had one blow or any problems... Prior to acquiring the PD158s the other 4 were loaded Eminence Delta 15s..Now these were wholly unsuited to the cab...ended up destroying one and blowing the dust caps off 2 others! Needless to say, the sound from the Deltas was not good either..honky and thin, really... As I said, I'd be happy to hire mine out to ya if you wanted to try before you build... Mine are (at the moment) up for sale at £2K for 8 horns... But I haven't had any takers, as yet... I now think I've found somewhere to store them to allow a bit more space in my lock-up, so I will probably hang onto them, for now... |
