Fair enough, just answering your comment about "boons". This is a forum for discussion and expressing opinions about everything!! ![]() And sometimes you can get equal satisfaction finding an alternative - much simpler solution to problems like this. And I know exactly how you feel. I've also, often gotten sucked into a challenge repairing some bit of gear because it is a challenge, but you also need to know when to just step back & reappraise the situation. |

I agree with JohnMath AND Old Croc. The trouble is you get more and more invested in these problems as the time spent gets racked up. I’ve already recapped the big electrolytics, removed and tested some of the semiconductors. The psu is relatively straight forward and I think the problem is there. Posting on these forums is a last ditch attempt to find someone who has been there before me. (I have had some amazing assistance in the past). It’s not as if the amp is dead, it is just noisy upon FIRST start up, then perfect! (It’s partner is fine)

Yeah -- that is annoying. Maybe scope the thing at different points at startup & see if you can trace where the origin of the noise is - or what it actually looks like. The waveform may give you a clue. I remember having problems with a Turbo module ages ago. I can't remember the model - I think it was a 10" or 8" plus 1". I contacted Turbo to see if I could get schematics, but all they were interested in doing was selling me a newer version of the amp - not really suitable, or compatible with the old one. Really silly. ![]() |

Is the amp module noisy when the amp is in mute on power up and then perfect AFTER the amp module comes out of mute ?. Could be just a fault in the audio mute circuit on power up, just a thought.

I've got a module on the bench from a "Turbosound" (Behringer) 12" wedge which was also "grumbling" on power up - we suspected power supply caps failing - however it turned out to be a sign of incipient failure in the class D bass amp section, which eventually blew out a MOSFET and caused it to not turn on at all. Seems like it will need a pair of new MOSFETs in the bass section and an IRS2092S control chip, as the gate drive for the blown FET is stuck high, luckily the circuit seems to be straight off the application note for said chip so repair is vaguely possible without schematics.

I am away from the amp right now, (until next week)….. if I recall correctly there is a mute switch, but I did not try the amp with this switch on. However the ‘grumbling’ noise appears for the first minute or so, irrespective of the input level set on the input pot.
Does that give any further clue?
