    Posted: 30 November 2023 at 11:51am
Hi all,

I have taken on a listed building to repurpose into a climbing gym and I am in desperate need for some help in the sound department. I apologise if this isnt the right place but I am quite lost with it all...

If anyone can either advise/point me in the right direction on a mid-range sound system with correct sized speakers for the gym Id be really grateful. As mentioned above, it is a listed building and so lots of different rooms, not just one open space like a warehouse: so a bit tricky...!

Here are the details:

Ideally I would like to have a few options:

  • To listen to different tracks in different "zones";
  • For the front desk and office to use a microphone that can either announce on a/some zone(s) or all zones;
  • For there to be a microphone in the office as well, and also the amp(s) should be located in the office;
Ground floor has 2 rooms, all with 5m high ceilings:

First room (entrance): 50m2 | wall mounted speaker(s) | (zone 1);
Hallway, where there will be a cafe: 60m2 | wall mounted speaker(s) | (zone 1);
Main climbing room 1: 124m2 | wall mounted speakers | (zone 2)

First Floor, has 2 rooms, all with 5m high ceilings:

Main climbing room 2: 120m2 | ceiling mounted | (zone 3);
Hallway is narrow and don't think I need a speaker here;
Secondary climbing room 50m2 | wall mounted | (zone 4);

Second Floor, 3 rooms with height of 3.3m high ceilings:

Womens changing room: 27m2 | flush ceiling mounted speaker | (zone 5);
Mens changing room: 16m2 | flush ceiling mounted speaker | (zone 5);
Secondary climbing room: 27m2 | wall mounted speaker here | (zone 6);

Top Floor, 2 rooms with different high ceilings:

Office (h=2.8m): 18m2 | flush ceiling | (zone 7);
Front room (h=3.5m): 43m2  | wall mounted | (zone 8);

If anyone knows of a good system/what wires I should be using etc...I would be really appreciative.

Thanks,

Ben

Sounds complex enough that you would want a qualified contractor to specify, design and install the system.
There are dedicated zoning mixers/ media matrices for these kind of installs.

Buy once, cry once.

Depending on property size, loudness requirements etc, amps in office might only be possible if you opt for a 70/100Volt system. Otherwise cable losses become prohibitive.

If you have to ask, you are not qualified to pull off the job by yourself. Save yourself a headache and get a qualified and certified company. Concentrate on the overall project management, you will get better results.
