I always wondered why the baseplate of a TO3 wasn't made out of copper or aluminium to aid themal conduct. 
The first ones were made around 1955, interestingly the pin spacing was so they could fit into standard valve sockets used at the time!

They where made of aluminium before....but expensive to made...so they quit good materials and......

Langrex (yitry on ebay) have been in business for decades and are widely regarded as trustworthy.
I remember visiting their trade counter in about 1970 when they were in Streatham, not far from where my grandparents lived.

I've got quite a few NOS aluminium TO-3 transistors, very lightweight. ISTR when LM338K regulators were all the rage (5A) they were aluminium to start with then changed to nickel-plated steel and were sold as LM338K-STEEL to emphasize the change. Not sure how it affected their performance.
