to andrew: nope, keep guessing...

to jez:   yup, what you are looking at there is 65, 5', 1 1/8" broom handles from screwfix direct. blue water pipe of outside diameter 32mm is just the right size for hammering the poles into once it has been softened in a tank of boiling water. the hubs are made from plywood off-cuts which were cut and drilled after having photocopied templates glued to them. poles are heald in place by m6 roofing screws and pronged tee nuts.

www.desertdomes.com has a calculator program for determining the correct lengths to cut your poles to, and i'd like to try a 3v dome at some point. also my method of doing hubs does provide strength through flexibility but can become twisted and floppy, i am looking at designing something which 'clicks' together. help in this may come from the fact that the 32mm water pipe has an internal dimension that snuggly houses a piece of 25mm external diameter steel conduit.

such a design will push up cost and manufacture time but will make assembly on site much quicker and easier. as it was i built the whole tent frame for around £125, well i say i, but that does no justice to the fact that i was only able to build such a structure with the help and enthusiasm of many friends. there's quite a few man hours in that one!

I know what i'm starting to make this weekend.  I've been wanting to build one of them for ages.  you're looks a perfect size for what i'm after.

ashnono:    if you come up with a more efficient hub design please let me know or post pictures, but yeah, i wanted to build a proper dome for ages and that one is a fantastic space for the price and simplicity. it was necessary to build jigs to ensure everything turned out the right size...

shop around for your blue plastic pipe, travis perkins wanted 1.76+vat per metre for 32mm pipe whereas it was 72p+vat from graham's.

arguably if you build that method without using hubs and just use a bolt through the blue pipe at nodes you get a cheaper and simpler tent, but it won't be quite as big for the length of pole. size matters?...

anyone interested feel free to badger me for construction pics if you think it'll be of any help, otherwise get building! after all, every rig should have at least one dome tent!
