Hi All, I would like to start a project to design and build a bass cabinet that will cover from about 40hz to 180hz when using only 1. Needs to be fairly compact, so i dont think a horn will get anywhere near 40hz. The cab will be used for all types of music. Looking to use a 15in driver if possible. Any ideas greatly appriciated Jamie Whitehouse |

Sounds like you need a typical 15" basreflex. Any favorite 15" ? Cheers |

A really nice driver for such purposes that has been available recently
might be the BMS 15s from the Ultra Low Distortion series (the neo
stuff looks really nice too). They have seriously low distortion and a
true 8mm x-max. They also model really well in reasonably compact
enclosures.
A plan for a compact lug-onto-the-back-seat 15" sub is the Achenbach 15" design to be found on www.lsv-achenbach.de -> baupläne (let google do the translation) . He uses a neo 18Sound 15 IIRC, but have a look and see how the alternatives fare. Martin |

at a quick glance, c15-600el looks pretty good, so does the s15-500lf and the p150/2226

There shouldn't be too much rocket-science to get a proper BR cab done
fairly well. The only contentious issue, is the end correction factor
for such corner-ports. In the words of a german forum: it is easier to
lengthen such a port than it is to shorten in a prototype enclosure.
One can get a fairly good measure of the port frequency by measuring
the impedance minimum between the two peaks in a BR alignment or better
yet, to measure the frequency response with teh mic inside/close to a
port. The peak is the port tuning frequency (which aparrently doesn't
occur exactly at the minimum between the peaks)
The link was provided as a starting point for such developments. Martin |

Tuba 24 (www.billfitzmaurice.com/plans/product_info.php/products_id/5) measures 24 inches cubed, runs from 32 to 200Hz with average 96dB/1 watt. Tuba 30 is 30 inches cubed, averages 100dB/watt from 32 to 200 Hz, though probably a bit too large for what you want.

Yup. Jamie has systems suitable for larger events and something small
can come in handy for corporate presentation or situations where one
needs something discreet. Unfortunately horn systems are generally not
suited for this (heck show them corporates where it's at and stack 12
HD15s in their face)

Hi. I would recomend a Dual Fifteen Reflex. It will give you the efficency, and, the SPL needed for high powered systems. Double Fifteens are as versatile as you can get. The Beyma 15 LX 60, would be a good candidate for the job, if you happen to find a good deal on them. Best Regards,

Fane 15XB seem to do the job OK in my reflex units.
