My mate is attempting an eight inch hog, and has scaled down the "Staiper" design. What are people's thoughts on this? U reckon it will work / sound any good? :D

They were kind of my thoughts, he's got an eight inch KEF driver, from a old CUBE1 where the power module has blown up, so he's experimenting...

What anyone suggest if not the HOG, for an eight inch driver....

You should be able to find a tapped horn design that will work well and provide good bass extension, with an 8" driver. For example: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1240371/high-output-8-tapped-horn

It'll be a total gamble whether it will work at all or not though unless you know the TS specs of the driver, but for purely experimental purposes, if you want bass, don't care that it won't go majorly loud (though probably plenty loud indoors for house party purposes etc), it's probably the best shot you have.

Why not just buy a decent driver with Known T/S Parameters.  And use that.  Even a cheap one, at least you know the specs.  On the other hand maybe the manufacturer will do you a favor and give you the information of the driver.

If I had a driver I knew nothing about, I would probably just rip out the amp module of the broken unit and rig up a speakon panel and use it as a passive speaker.  Manufacturer knew the specs and theoretically designed the box to suit it.

I realize that is not really fun, but if I were going to build a complicated box, it is best to have some idea how it will perform or there is a decent chance I will do all that work and blow the driver the first time I play it really loud.  Horns are kind of tough on drivers if they are not suited.

Because its not my project, so im certainly not spending any money buying new drivers etc, and this is a small project, for a small room. He can barely turn the KEF box he's got up anyway, so worries about it going too loud arent a problem either.. This guy aint bothererd, he wants an eight inch scoop or hog to go behind his tv, as a talking point.. so designing him a new box is way past what im bothered about..

Personally, I have another project involving 6 PD's and some new boxes for our sound, so this is a side thing.  :D
