Well, I have my first experience with a Speakerplans design to report. My newly built X15s were employed for a live-concert which was initially planned for 300+ peeps, but only 170 peeps showed up (was moved indoors on account of weather). I was responsible only for the PA and hired in two double 15s (Fane 15XB something). Amps were 4x Behringer EP2500 (I plead wallet and that I’d prefer a fully active setup) driven by the DCX2496.

The X15s surprised me with their more than acceptable mid for a 15”. Sounded a little harsh when really pushed during setup (decided on 2.1kHz cross for the BM-D450 and 110Hz cross to the double 15s) but sufficient output for a venue that seats 700 (my old school hall) music was gospel with occasional touches of rock (so nothing too loud). We battled a little with a lack of outboard processing (Soundcraft LX-7, a multi-effects unit and a feedback destroyer for monitors). We didn’t really miss the dynamics processing too much as there was plenty of headroom and musicians with proper mic-technique.

(Initial setup was tweaked with Speaker Workshop and setup was warmed up with some Squatjuice mix action for good effect). I would be inclined to flatly refuse an analog crossover thesedays.

All in all I think this is a useable all-purpose box and I will likely give a passive x-over a try sometime in the future. They might even get a thorough beating coming Friday in collaboration with Iain.za. Next up is a 12”/1” based on P.Audio’s new neo drivers and some Sub action (I have to wait a full week to get any wood cut around here).

Sounds similar to last week, except I used MT102 and double fane 15XB reflex units.  Got quite a bit extra volume over the house system with the tops, but they are quite heavy, even with 15mm cabinets.

Shame about the distance, would be nice to do a comparison with the X15's!

hehe, Those double 15s got a proper beating on sound-check (I was quite shocked they didn't bottom on me). I will return them with a comment that they rattle somewhere (at levels where the hire company has never run them, they're still stuck in the stone-age regarding amps and pair these up to disgusting sounding 15"/1" plastic rubbish bins). The X15 would not be much of a match for a horn-top, but could probably win at low levels due to better sound (though this is not having heard MT102s)

All things considered, I'm fairly happy with the outcome. My Tannoys absolutely smoke these at home, but that's not very fair (x-over at 1k on the Tannoy 15s) I am really interrested in what'll come out of the Winner 12S which weighs in at a touch more than a re-cone kit of yore. I am really starting to appreciate the benefits of shaving weight off cabs.

The house system is a big 3-way box run off a powered mixer, so the comparison isn't very fair. Next time I do that hall, I'd like to return with horns (preferably of the Porn type)
