I’ve seen a few posts before recommending car body filler for refurbing speakers, does anyone have any brand recommendations or alternative solutions?
Will be painting with a pre cat paint afterwards if that makes a difference? |

there's no point making the filler harder than the wood. use wood filler - clue is in the name.

Any two part filler should do the job, behind the marketing they’re all pretty much the same goop in a different tub

Dont use wood filler, it takes forever to dry and shrinks or cracks. Bog standard halfords brand body filler is perfect, sands at the same rate as ply so no high spots, paints nicely too.

Unless you use 2-part wood filler as was linked to above for the same reasons as my last post |

metrolux or screwfix own 2 part wood filler. both work well. cures with less holes in it than car filler and slightly more flexible which is better in wood.

Depending on how big the area to be filled are I use a few different tricks. Some wood fillers can be a little powdery, and they can be made harder and stronger by adding PVA glue, you have to overfill slightly and then sand back. If its a large area, I try to use actual wood to fill the hole, either wood shavings and PVA in the filler mix or a single laminate of ply taken off with sharp chisel and glued in place with a little filler afterwards.
Some car body fillers can become brittle, and also they are not as porous as wood/wood filler. So moisture absorption and expansion/contraction with temperature can be somewhat different to wood. If your wood expands 0.5mm over a large area and the filler doesnt, its not going to end well. Car body filler works fine in screw holes, but Ive not been impressed for larger fills.

I ended up going with the 2 part wood filler in the end and it seems to have done a good job, just need to get round to painting now.
