Hi all,
I want to make a pair of dummy rectangular horns for the back of my truck. I know this seems strange to you speaker builders but .... Please see the picture of the back of the truck. Two high/midrange speakers are now mounted in the back wall just near the upper outer corners. There are two big subs in the floor. The entire plywood truck body is one big speaker box. No enclosures behind the speakers. The sound outside is good as it is. Inside is not tollerable :) But for appearance only I want rectangular horns outside the upper speakers. Likely curved ones not straight. Maybe they have to be made of perforated material so as not to muck up the sound ? Speaker mouths are 9" wide and rectangular. Any idea how to get a profile to make the horn sections ? I know you all going to say "don't do it" but it's just for the appearance and I'm sure you will appreciate that on a 90 year old truck. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XAcfmFXCf7Pa_OTY8s5V_WH7QOF171nd https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XAcfmFXCf7Pa_OTY8s5V_WH7QOF171nd

First thing I'd do is not use photobucket! We CANNOT see the pictures unless clicking through.

Wow, you weren't kidding, 90 years old!
Maybe buy some old gramophone horns and mount them instead
Seriously though I think the aesthetic you're looking for might be better achieved by buying some ancient metal horns and mounting them on the roof, as such a vehicle would have had when in production. Edited by Hemisphere - 13 May 2018 at 12:51pm |

Gramaphone horns typically have only a small inlet and I need to inlet the sound from the speakers I have which are 9" wide.
Could mount dummies somewhere not on the speakers but then what would I cover the speaker with ? Still need something. |

You could cover the speakers with all sorts of things. A ply grille with really large holes or a decorative pattern cut in it wouldn't indicate a speaker to most people, especially if there were other components mounted which looked very much like speakers.
Trying to add a dummy horn to speakers that already work well without any horn doesn't seem like a good idea. Perforation of the horn to stop it interfering with the audio would look bizarre.

Yeah thanks Hemisphere. But wherever I mount them I still need to fabricate something that looks like an old style speaker horn. Even if it's made of cardboard. What I suppose I'm after is a drawing to cut out the sections from. |
