hi guys
I’m looking at subs to go under Yamaha dbr12s, Was thinking of 2 box pyrit 12s rated at 127db or a single instance of the new Yamaha dxs12 Mk 2 rated at 134db. The double version of the pyrit sub is rated at 132db, is this what I would achieve if I stacked 2 singles or had one each side of the stage ? What do you think? I think thems marketing decibels - the best you can possibly expect is 3db more but even that's under ideal conditions.

No, you can expect 6dB more (under ideal conditions). Real world conditions presumably closer to 5dB hence the 127/132dB.
+3dB from double the Watts +3dB from double the drivers.

we are getting bladded by the noise police and pushed further in to the corner, I thought having two subs could help stop people from tripping over my tripods. I Obviously would love 2 of the yammie subs, but wonder would building a dummy sub the same size with a top hat in it to use as a lead bag and speaker supporter on one side plus a single yammy sub on the other be better ?
Would the single yammie sound better than 2 pyrits, I guess that’s the question isn’t it? Edited by kevin tyler - 21 June 2018 at 1:57pm |

If one sub is 134dB and the other is 132dB for a double than the first one should be louder, but as Risc pointed out..gotta watch out for marketing decibels 134 for a single 12" (reflex?) sub sounds like a stretch. Some FBT subs I was looking at had specs that could only be accurate if each 18" driver was 103dB/Watt in the reflex arrangement.. Look at amp power and calculate back to the drivers if possible, or try and arrange a listening test from a retailer.

On the face of it, SPL isn't going to be to be the issue as it seems that almost anything is likely to be capable of being loud enough to cause problems. So, as I see it, the issues are sound quality and practicality. Personally, I would be inclined to go for 2. Firstly because, while sub bass is omni-directional, it still follows the inverse square law so, unless you can have your single sub in the middle of the, ahem, "stage", there will be more bass on one side of the room than the other. Imho, that is likely to have more of an impact on the audience's perception of quality than any difference in sound quality between one sub and another. Secondly, if you have 2 subs and one goes down, you still have sub. Just my 2p.

thanks guys
I really appreciate the advice. 2 subs it is. After 30 years of gigging, I still can’t make head nor tail of these specs, I have gigged in a big room with the active Thomann 18 sub that has 2 200 w outputs for 10inch satellites. It was fine to be honest for what I do, if I had looked at the specs of this bundle before hand, I would have probably brought my dsrs in and not used the house rig at this venue. Cheers. Kev
