Part B: select or connect an external storage device. Where it says <none>, select your 128GB USB drive. You might as well go through part A as well and delete all the junk clogging up your C drive, and if you want the Pro tip, "clean up system files" as well. I'll bet there's a 10GB system restore hogging space. Kill it all. I've got one of these 32GB drive laptops, free from John Lewis broadband for signing up, so I'm not complaining, even though my eleven year old desktop spanks it. It gets through the six-monthy update fine if it's got a usb or micro SD card plugged in to use. A Windows 10 install shouldn't be much more than 11GB, plus another few for the browser, etc.

I'm a Windows and 'droid user... but doesn't stop me hating windows... there truly is no real solid reason for Windows 10 to be 11gb inside as a fresh install! Yes a 32gb drive was a stupid idea from that computer company but if we knew the make and model we could suggest other ways to help rather then just removing all traces of restore points that may help at some point.
I'm hoping it's a laptop with an optical drive so we can cure the problem once and for all and get him away from that stupid 32gb drive he's using... |

It's an Asus (from the screen background) and no, there won't be an optical drive in a laptop with a 32Gb eMMC hard drive, or indeed any laptop you could buy new today.
Deleting system restore points is really not a problem; when was the last time you used one? OP only has to clear 0.8GB from his hard drive and use a USB drive with at least 10GB orf space to get the update to install. Follow the sodding instructions on the screen...

Many of the Asus have a ready made 2.5" expansion on the bottom. No need for Optical/hdd caddy things. I ain't knocking 10 for it's foibles, less than an hour installed and completely patched, Win7 has so many patches it takes forever and fails if not 4gb or more RAM (64bit), unless you do them in bits. Also 10 will run on 2gb, 7 is shagged unless on 4 or more, plenty more if you use AV. Worst thing about 10 for me is you cannot monitor the chkdsk progress (tried all the switches), used to see bad sector added then shut off and move on with new drive. No more, just a bad representation of %, oh and it really does seem to have wireless printing driver issues too. On subject, does it have an expansion slot underneath?

...tons of laptops have optical drives still on the market!
Netbooks and notebooks tend not too. Can we get the model so we can solve this much much quicker please... Like any problem on here we need full information to solve the problem at hand or we are just stabbing in the dark and making this tread 20x longer then it needs to be... we are already nearing the end of page 2 and we have little to bugger all info on WHAT laptop we are fixing, or at least trying to help fix |

You're quite correct: A quick look at the Currys website shows five models with a dvd drive, of the four hundred odd listed. However, none of the Asus models with a 32GB eMMC are in this category, so I think we can safely assume there's no optical drive. Have we hit page three yet, or has Dub Specialist traded in his new computer for a Mac?

Mac? How dare you!!!! Only thing those things are useful for is wiping and installing windows... and even that isn't THAT much of an improvement. So have we determined if it's hard soldered to the MB or there's a slot we can upgrade with... again, a model number would really help here

If it's a 32GB eMMC, it's hard soldered. 64GB ones are removable.
Any usb, SD card or micro SD can be used as additional storage (which he'll need) but he's also got to clear up some space on the C drive. The update will download to and unpack on the usb/SD/microSD, but it needs sufficient space to install on the C drive. Really, following the instructions on the screen (shot) to clear space on C and using an external memory chip will allow the windows update to install without any problems. I've done exactly the same with a 32GB Lenovo and a 64GB usb key.
