Looking for advice on repainting some Logic System cabinets and the best paint to use. The cabs came out of an install and were originally white and I would like to repaint them black.
I have already made the mistake of using Tuff Cab and being water based find that it is not bonding well to the original surface as it easily chips and scratches. I am reluctant to rub the cabinets down as I would like to retain the textured surface of the original paint. So is there a preferred paint to use? A rattle-can would probably be the preferred choice, I have a spray gun and airline which could be a second option but don't want to start going down the two-pack paint route.

I've uses warnex numerous times to cover old warnex, no bad experiences what so ever (and it's also water based).
But first I prep the cabs:
1.Clean the cabs 2.Remove al dust with a cloth that doesn't leve any fibers. 3.Remove oils with some ammonia 4.Again with the cloth Room temperature around 16 degrees. |

You must sand the surface with a 60 grit so the new coat can have something to grip on. Not to bare wood, just the paint surface.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think that the cabs were originally painted with acrylic based paint so I'm concerned about using any water based paint. Black over white is not a good combination as the slightest mark shows the white through.
As mentioned before I am reluctant to sand the surface down as I am trying to retain the textured finish. What I'm looking for is a paint with an acrylic base really.

When rolled with the correct roller (or sprayed correctly) Warnex will have it's own textured finish, so you can just sand away really.

Acrylic base is not solvent based. They go over eachother with water based paints without any problem.

Im not sure what water based products are available in Europe, but I have found no water based in the US worth using.
Acrytech/ Acry-tech DuraTex water based speaker paint is pushed a lot over here. Its over priced garbage. Even sherwin williams water based industrial coatings are not suitable for any pro or semi-pro use. Acrylic water borne paint never fully "cures" the cabinets can not be stacked on each other for any amount of time without "welding" together. I would find a quality pre-catalyzed poly product. It will stick to most previous coatings and wear much better.

bit of a curve ball, another forum member mentioned using raptor liner on cabs
Been thinking same. Warmex is what I use also, its a great product. Its also reduced on bax at present. (if you have a trade Penn account can be acquired cheaper) Edited by dlyxover - 22 November 2018 at 5:55pm |
