have a pair of neo 18s here.. bought recone kits for them before realising that actually the pole pieces had shifted in the gaps..

it's been a bit barbaric, but i have them separated from the magnets now (well one of 2 but i'm relatively confident i can force the other one apart the same way). it's a bit of a project but i figure it's worth a go. current thinking is to make a circular shim the right size maybe out of stiff floor lino or something.. i'll look around for something i can do of the right thickness.

so as topic title said.. what kind of glue should i maybe be looking at for sticking it back in?

cheers.

i'll charge my phone and see what pics i have.. i'm definitely up for giving it a go.

it's a 4" gap. and it's the piece in the center has moved. and i've managed to force it out. it's not that big, maybe only a centimeter deep, and has a flat surface behind to get glued on to.

so if i can shim that gap with something not magnetic, malleable enough to make a circle of.. and that hopefully won't actually get glued in.. then, could be ok.

had 2 hole saws the right size so made a little frame out of some sheets of wood.

cut the points off a couple of nails, put the lot in the vice and used the nails to press the pole piece out from behind.

because it was offset, couldn't put even pressure on the back, so it partially came out.. sort of wonky.. still the magnet held onto it though.

so i tapped a thread into the hole on the back, screwed a bolt in and used that to lever it out straight with a crowbar...

so here i am, with these 2 surfaces to attempt to glue back together.

Clean it thoroughly with Loctite 7063, then you will need 326 magnet bonder and 7649 actuator, spray on the actuator first, allow to go off then apply the 326 to the pole or magnet you are re fitting and press into place, this system was designed by a very clever chemist at Loctite called Bob Goss, we use this when building our drivers and it never fails, we have tried other products but nothing comes close, if you can centralise it it will be ok, and take your time, do not rush, if you need any more advise just shout. Good luck.

We don't de-magnatize, we turn up shims from Aluminium and place them over the pole, then lower the magnet down very carefully onto some aluminium wedges, these are then removed and the magnet sits on the back plate and bonds, some big magnets can take the end of your finger tip off if you are not very careful, it's an art but it works every time. Most people think a driver with a shifted magnet is scrap but they are all usually repairable.

I guess you should be able to use the bolt to lower the magnet back into the cup, sorting the shims looks like the fun part, any give and the magnet will be off centre.
Re magnet, IIRC neo is very susceptible to corrosion if left open to the air hence the metal coating, maybe worth covering the chipped areas with something, stove paint maybe?

excellent guys, thank you.

may not work out but it's worth a go. new drivers are expensive for what they are, and sure i might succeed...

thanks again.

well. gluing magnets... wow pretty difficult really.

i fear this may have just been an expensive experiment. had a go at it today with a shim made from a ring of aluminium, but that won't do it. as mentioned above, some sort of aluminium wedges seems necessary.

don't get much glue for a fair bit of money with that stuff.

anyway.. it went in wonky, kinda mashed up the shim, hard to explain and i'm not in the humour for trying... managed to separate them again at least.

off to lick my wounds and think about this some more.

Last time I relocated a pole piece (wasn't 4" though) I used epoxy to glue and three sets of plastic strips at 120 degrees around the gap, 1-1.5" ish wide to locate it centrally. Inserted them with the help of a screwdriver to lever the metal away from the side. Mostly cut up plastic from packaging. All came out when epoxy had set.
Good luck with yours.
