Was at a friends place last night listening to their system. They had this curious old woofer that came from a 15" scoop. Anyone recognize this? Thought it might bring back some memories for the oldtimers on here.......

I love the warning, “capable of producing sound levels that can damage your hearing” 250w! Didn’t need drivers capable of 2kw then!

Yeah, the art of efficiency was the design criteria as big power didn't exist. Big box's was the draw back. Still, it's a design philosophy I think has been lost l.

102 103dB was achievable but with low power handling and a lot of beaming. also music had almost no low end content. most of it was kickdrum and vocals. (60-70Hz and upwards) nowadays you need a LOT of subbass optimised speakers to play modern music

It has lightweight paper cone,so expect about 100db. JBL e130 managed around 105db. Limited low-end response,as Micrea says. Of course fitting them large bass horns would improve things a lot.
Most disco tunes had a decent about of low-end...Donna summer, love to love you, from 1974, had a fair bit, probably around 50hz rather than true sub though. |

Be seeing you.

richard allen go back a long way, I know them from my vintage radio hobby, they made extension speaker cabinets so you could listen to your living room radio in your kitchen at the same time...nothing so extravagant as a 2-radio household back then!
I have a Richard Allen cab in the corner of my workshop. They're still trading, but have shortened their name to RA Technology. Dont know why, sounded grander as 'Richard Allen Radio'. |

I'm sure Mckenzie were bought out by Fane before then being bought out themselves by Wharfedale.
