No, that's definitely an old wive's tale!
Perhaps James Lansing just started out with a magnetiser that was wired up backwards... There may be a real explanation somewhere on the Lansing History website. |

Thanks...according to a JBL tech note that appeared at the top of a Google search using the obvious terminology (D'oh!) James Lansing had "arbitrarily" arrived at that standard early on. It was then retained for consistency, as JBL's user base became established in the 1950s and beyond. I couldn't find separate actual James Lansing-specific (versus JBL corporate) answer, but given his pioneering work in the field - I see no reason why the above answer would not be perfectly plausible! I guess when (for example) we still had Soundcraft using pin 3 hot as their standard in living history, it's easy to see why these kind of industry standardisations took time to evolve.

Are you talking niche mics, specialist studio products etc, or a mainstream PA brand regular folks will inevitably encounter? I vaguely recall being warned that certain pieces of outboard are still inherently wired that way. However supposedly it wasn't the same kind problem as the JBL issue, as for example using outboard with pin 3 hot (consistent from input to output) via an insert renders the whole thing moot. Obviously the latter could change if we put such a piece of kit in series, in different circumstances.
