I find its the bass on JA Oldies that is hardest to get sounding good, the mids and tops are generally pretty good and clean especially with good og press records.

This, for me, is where the pre-amp comes in especially the older ones because they, along with a decent operator, who knows his music from different studios, have been designed for the music. I was able to watch my selector and which label was playing next to preempt the required settings in regards to the parametric, graphic etc. Going from Studio 1 to Treasure Island to Blue Beat for instance, required some quick adjusting. It can be done with practice and experience.

Multicell Horns were designed for either stand alone (Public Address) applications in stadiums or on top of large horn-loaded systems such as the Altec A-2. I will tell you from owning Altec Multicells that such a horn is overkill for just two Scoops. In other words, two scoops will not be able to keep up to a Multicell no matter how much power you through at it. The smallest version (803/805) are the same size as PD 186/1850 Bass Bin. The Altec 811 or 511 would be better for your application however if you still want Multicells...

There are two versions. The 03 (300 Hz) versions and the 05 (500 Hz) version. Either version will allow you to achieve 300 Hz or 500 Hz flat. They are not these modern day horns that offer a frequency response taking -10 dB in account. The first denominator(s) is the cell count. My 803 will deliver down to 150 Hz half-space or 300 Hz full space.

There are only a few modern compression drivers that can take full advantage of horns of such magnitude in this day and age and, they generally are coaxial designed. Such compression drivers will offer a frequency response down to 400 Hz. There are also adaptors that allows you to integrate multiple compression drivers on Multicell horns to increase their SPL. Bear in mind these are stadium horns aimed for vocal presentations and sirens. They excel in the midrange region for that is what they were deigned for.

High frequency limitation is around 10 kHz flat so, you will still need tweeters to take you up to 20 kHz unless your ears cannot register anything beyond 12 kHz.

If you decide to go for the 811 or 511 they offer a higher frequency response than the Multicell. I measured my 511's with music (Analogue no Digital) and it made it up to 17 kHz which is fine if your ears cannot register beyond 16 kHz. The 811/511 may reach into the 20 kHz range for the limiting factor was the compression driver (Modern day driver) that rolls off beyond 18 kHz.

Nevertheless, here is a video I made a few years ago demonstrating the sound of an Altec 803 using a cone speaker. You should attain the same sound with a compression driver capable in achieving 300 Hz.

Best Regards,

Elliot Thompson
