Or it could be one of the 13A sockets commonly found in hotel ballrooms where the contacts are so loose you could barely call it a 3A socket, if you gaffa the plug in.

That's my main point, the state of the wiring. Old cable, withered plastic coating.. Etc I misquoted ciaran, he reminded me the conversation was about running 16a through a 13a,but that if you don't know state of wiring, 5-7amp continuous is a safe margin of error. . I just took away 13a... Hot...but he does get all detailed 
AKA the typo king...bear with me, my hands are big and the keyboard small....
