so im a fairly new member,
I am going to attempt to start by building a scoop sub, 18" and id like to ask MDF or birch Ply, and the pros and cons, also would it be a good idea to create the structure of the enclosure out of ply, coat that with veneer and then use MDF for the interior braces ? also what would be the best way to attach the veneer and would i want to do it inside and out? thank you !

Ive found that 18mm ply works fab for me, as long as cabinet is plum and fitted tightly.

MDF - generally cheaper, denser & can sound good - but no good if it´s going to be moved around a lot or used outside. Also needs to be well sealed and painted to avoid damp destroying it. Ply - standard material for cabinets. Very robust & will sound fine as long as well braced. Veneer - maybe to protect the outside instead of 2-part paint, etc, but I wouldn´t use it inside the cabinet. |

Thank you so much, very useful, Ill scrap the veneer (I think even if I put it on the outside it will get damaged and look messy, so ply..
this bracing you speak of, do you mean interior bracing? or some sort of metal around the edges, would this cause unwanted rattling? |

Bracing - yes, internal battening to stengthen the cabinet and stop it vibrating. |

Whatever you think looks best, the stain won’t affect the sound unless it gets on the actual drivers

Scoops, ply!
Box becomes heavy, gets hauled, dropped and banged -> disastruous for mdf. Metal fittings/edges have been time and again rejected based on experience. Every time this question comes up, an oldtimer pops in to tell how these metal parts have caused all kinds of nasty wounds after they slowly come loose from the abuse. |
