Hello Speakerplans!  Against all financial prudence, I've decided to start a little sound system project, probably one stack to start.  It may be some time before actual construction of the sound begins.  In the meantime, because I know build times can be lengthy, I'm in the market for a 4-way reggae preamp, a piece of equipment I can use at home straight away.

One thing I can't quite figure is how a 4 way preamp (or 5 or 3 for that matter) can be played on a home hifi (1 way system). On most 4 way preamps I see you've got 2x sub, kick, mid, and top outputs but no full range output option. How do you play a 4 way preamp as a 1 way, full range preamp? To consolidate outputs to 1 way would you need to send the 4 preamp outputs to a mixer? Would this result in any loss of audio quality?

Thanks in advance.

Yes use a small line mixer to combine all the outputs into 1 stereo pair, any half decent mixer will have no effect on SQ as long as you keep the levels through it in the green.

Different pre amps have different methods but quite a few have a full range/record out that is all the frequencies on 1 connector.

Others have 2 outputs per frequency band so you can use link cables to joins the outputs together and then they will work like a full range out. Ie you link bass to kick, kick to mids, mids to tops & then tops to your hifi and it will all all get to the hifi.

Other option is as above, take all outputs and pop them into a mixer which will recombine them into a single output.

The other thing to be aware of is that using the eq extensively on a pre amp will probably blow up your home hifi especially if you start to push the parametric on the bottom end. This will happen due to the frequency rather than the volume as most hifi stuff is not designed to do anything meaningful below 40hz and certainly not handle 18db of boost at 30hz.

Full range out, maybe chuck a 40hz filter on too, as above, else you may blow your hifi up..
