I've been wondering lately i've have four Wharfedale Pro Delta 218B dual 18" subs they're nice and sound great but at a guess would four properly designed custom made single 18" reflex subs loaded with RCF L18P400 drivers with enclosures tuned at about 30hz give me higher spl, more of a stomach churning sound?

Maybe... maybe not. The drivers might handle more power but if their sensitivity is lower they won't get appreciably louder.

Fundamentally a reflex sub can produce any kind of sound you want you just have to shape it's output with EQ to produce the desired effect.

Try it. If you want more impact raise the lowcut to 40hz and put a little boost in around 70-80hz.

I don't want to be too critical but this is yet another example on this forum where someone seems determined to take the expensive route around what is really just a lack of processing problem.

I don't mind spending a bit of money to get a better sound, I was just curious i'm not though the kind of person to think ah sod it i'll spend thousands and see, lol. The lack of output from my subs could be to do with room cancellation because the pub is small that I have my four Wharfedale Delta 218b subs in. I'd say the pub's live music room is at a guess no more than 40ft long by about 20ft wide, lol. I am right in thinking that powerful subs ideally need room to breathe, and in a room too small the sound reflections from walls can cause nodes right?

That's to a certain degree though isn't it, because bossting eq messes up the gain structure if you boost eq after doing gain structure. If I was to add a little eq boost what frequency boost width would be good/safe? Maybe a 2db boost at 75hz with a Q of 1.8 does that sound ok?

Isn't Wharfedale more of a disco box than a live box?

Where in the room do you have the gear setup? Draw a little sketch and post it up with distances between speakers and walls marked in or post some pictures.
Rooms do play havoc with low frequencies, guaranteed you have some room nodes going on... places where output sums and is really loud and other places where it cancels. That can't be totally fixed, often the best you can hope for is good output centered on the dancefloor instead of in the loo. Getting the best out of a system in any given room involves finding the best compromise position for the boxes, sometimes that could be all stacked in 1 place other times it might be split up either side of the stage or elsewhere in the room, and sometimes you have no choice because of space limitations.

The Wharfedale Delta series were Wharfedale's line to take on JBL's old MPro series and MRX series speaker cabs and to be honest they did well. I demo'd some MRX515 cabs next to a pair of MX115 Wharfedale cabs which have the same drivers in as the Delta series and the Wharfedales sounded better. I love my Wharfedale system, I can under how people think the cheaper EVP-X series are cheap they're MDF cabs but the Delta series are greating speakers. I used to have a pair of FBT X-Lite 12A powered speaker cabs for dj monitors and the Wharfedale Pro Delta 12 cabs I bought a couple of weeks after selling them sound much better and are way louder.

My Delta 218b dual 18" subs are great subs for their cheap price they only cost me £680 per sub brand new you can feel the bass in the bottom to middle of your stomach whereas the older JBL SRX728 subs I used to have didn't go so lower down.

With regards to this post I made I was just curious to be honest. I know my subs in my flat sound good but not great, in the pub they sound better and my understanding is it's because it's not such a small room as my bedroom where my subs are stored when not used. I know when given space subs can shine although you obviously get higher spl if there's a wall behind them I know the boundary effect.

Ok i'll do that tomorrow for you using Microsoft Paint if you want and I might be able to upload a photos of the room, well half the room where the music artist area is anyway so it gives you an idea how small the pub is.

If you are happy with the wharfdales why not buy some more of the same cab.

In my own mind, wharfdale and pro audio do not sit close together. But that may just be me.
In bass no one can hear you scream!

But have you ever heard the Delta series? I remember the Pro Sound Web guys saying they were the best budget subs you could buy, Wharfedale added the 'Pro' bit to seperate their hi-fi speakers from pro audio/live sound because they also do a Delta series hi-fi range or used to as far as i'm aware. My Delta 218b dual 18" subs sounded just as good as EV's Tour-X TX2181 dual 18" subs when I demo'd them, in fact my Delta go lower down into the frequency range. Reviews before I bought them also stated they sounded better than Peavey's SP series dual 18" subs as well when people demo'd them next to each other. I remember reading online that some sound hire companies use the Delta 18b and Delta 218b subs and take the badges off so people don't know what they are and can only go by how they sound.

They're not in the same league as EV Phoenix etc...but for budget subs they are damn good.
