Now that you said it twice I went back and looked at the OPs first post and realized he apparently has the regular stamped steel Kappa 15a not the Pro version with the cast frame. Assuming that isn't a mistake you are correct... these aren't worth reconing, matter of fact I don't think there are recone kits available for these stamped baskets. And given that the OP has melted these they are probably not up to whatever job he has them doing anyway, so the smart money would be spent on better drivers.

Very simple idiot's way to test if a speaker is dead or not,and no multimeter. Get any 1.5 battery, one wire to positive terminal on battery, one wire to negative terminal. You should hear a click at least. If nothing, then the coil is dead/open circuit.

1.5V is a bit small. Better with a PP9, or similar. |

Rather than playing around with batteries....get a multimeter!!
Even just quickly looking at Halfords website, they sell a quite useable digital multimeter for £8.00. Useful for lots of things. |

Even a AAA 1.5v battery will give an audible click when connected across a driver, which is enough to tell you whether it's dead or not...
