......To change all the Mosfets in that amp with the Exicon equivalents would cost over £350.00 for just the parts. Cry

You could also "modify" the setup and use the cheaper "X" range. The equivalent to the 2SJ162/2SK1058. That works out a lot cheaper (if replacement is actually needed).

The ECX range are only rated 8 amp 125watts, The ECF range and BUZ901D are 16amp 250watt devices.

Ok, fair enough.

I've used the 2SJ162/2SK1058 devices as replacements for the old Hitachi devices, like K135/J50 and they've been fine. Very stable, etc.

The idea is obviously to make sure that there are enough devices to share the load - and decent cooling. That will keep everything within it's SOA. The cheap amps you see around these days are cheap because the skimp on the O/P devices and invariably go pop.

What would be the output of that with a full set of 16 devices per channel, 2x 1000 into 4 ohms?  I couldn't find the specs online.

The old UKP and STR amps model numbers tend to reflect the RMS power into both channels at 4R i.e. the UKP2100 is rated 1050Watts RMS per channel onto 4ohms so I would think the STK3000 is 1500watts/PC into 4 ohms.

I still have an old Matrix brochure from this era somewhere I'll try to dig it out.

Yep, 2 x 1500 into 4r for the STR 3000, although the one I had never sounded as gutsy on bass as the C Audio XR3801's I had which were rated at 1200w per channel, to be fair, the C Audios were 1U bigger than the Matrix so had the room for a much larger power supply. :)

The "Double Die" devices :) ... very hard to find originals now.   On the plus side, they do seem to keep going. When we do occasionally get one in for repair, it tends to be just a single device that has gone pop, and my repair guy still has a box of ones harvested from other deceased units.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to respond. Lots of useful information.

Unfortunately the amp does seem to have a fault on one channel. It dosen't seem to be any quieter than the other but has noticeable distortion.

Any way it is now listed on ebay if anyone is interested in buying as is or can recommend someone close to Northampton to have a look for me.
