Hi Everyone so i thought about creating a discussing about arraying drivers, specifically midrange drivers.

Its not uncommon to see simple bass reflex loaded mids (10, 12 and 15 inch drivers) sat side by side with a HF driver mounted in some form of a horn above. Problem is, your always going to experience severe comb filtering in the mid range and often high frequency range too due to people using 70-90 degree horizontal dispersion horns.

Even with enclosures with horn loaded mids people dont splay them correctly but what makes absolutely no sense to me is a lot of line arrays also use the same design choice of a fully array-able high frequency section with direct radiation mid range drivers. Theoretically as discussed above the response at any point in the crowd should be well, disappointing the say. an example of this type of design is teh L'acoustics A series (line source array) .

But if companies like L'Acosutics do this then the benefit of the more simple design MUST out-way the negatives in terms of pattern control and frequency response across teh listening area. What are people opinions on this?. Id be interested to hear

The only way to achieve a smooth response across a listening area is use 1 speaker per side of use a fully horn loaded line array.

Which lacoustics speakers are you referring to? The Arcs?
If yes than you should know that their HF horns are very directional and the crossover point is low enough to avoid audible combfiltering from the LF drivers at distance.

I'm referring the the A Series - Line source - L-Acoustics (l-acoustics.com) .

Even if the HF goes extends to 1Khz there will still be significant interference patterns from 2-300Hz and up.

i guess its a trade-off you have to make

Crossover is at 800Hz. Below 800Hz even horn loaded boxes struggle with keeping the pattern control controlled. At 350Hz to steer the sound you will have to have a massive horn.
But, when you start arraying boxes vertically, more boxes you add, more the directivity narrows. So once you hit 4-6 boxes in a hang vertical combfiltering is not an issue. especially when you consider that our ears are way less sensitive in variations in the vertical domain. You should be levitating up and down to be able to hear the combfiltering in vertical domain.
That is the reason why line arrays are vertical and not horizontal.
